Conversations with David Jofre

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jofre.

Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in the Northern part of Chile, and when I was about 12, I watched a behind the scenes TV show about how movies were made. In that moment, something just clicked. Acting seemed like a pretty impossible dream back then, but I started making short films, doing theater, and eventually moved to Santiago and studied Film Production.

In 2002, I moved to the U.S., speaking very little English and somehow found my way into television news, working both behind and in front of the camera. Acting was always in the back of my mind, though, and little by little it became the main focus.

More than 20 years later, I’ve been lucky enough to work in film, television, and hundreds of commercials. It’s been a long, unexpected road and I’m still learning, still doing my homework, and honestly, I feel like I’m just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road, but I think that’s part of what makes the journey interesting. Moving from Chile to the U.S. with very little English was probably one of my biggest challenges. I had to learn a new language, adapt to a new culture, and figure out how to build a career from scratch.

Acting itself comes with plenty of rejection and uncertainty. There have been great years and really slow ones, moments when I questioned whether I was on the right path, and plenty of auditions that went nowhere. Being a Latino actor with an accent also came with its own challenges, especially earlier in my career.

But every setback taught me something. More than 20 years later, I’m still here, still auditioning, still learning and I think perseverance has probably been the most important part of my career.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor and filmmaker, and storytelling has pretty much been the common thread throughout my entire career. I’ve spent more than 20 years working both behind and in front of the camera, from television news and production to film, TV, and hundreds of commercials.

As an actor, I’m usually drawn to complex characters, people with some weight, history, or contradiction behind them. I think what sets me apart is my background. I grew up in Chile, built a life and career in the U.S., worked as a journalist, filmmaker, and even spent years in combat sports. All of those experiences give me a lot to pull from when creating a character.

What I’m most proud of isn’t necessarily one role or award, but the fact that after all these years I’m still working, still growing, and still genuinely excited about the craft. I think longevity in this business is an accomplishment in itself.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success has changed a lot over the years. When I was younger, I probably measured it by roles, money, or recognition. Today, it’s much simpler: being able to make a living doing things I genuinely enjoy, having time for the people I love, and still being excited about what’s next. I don’t think success is a destination anymore. It’s having the freedom to keep creating, learning, and enjoying the ride.
