Check Out Dannie Carreon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dannie Carreon.

Hi dannie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my creative photography journey as a child, my mom would get me a disposable cameras to take on field trips. My mom was always a creative person, she would take pictures of family events and would make these photo scrap books by cutting different color and pattern background paper. She also made tons of memory souvenirs we call recuerdos in Spanish for family events like sweet fifteens aka quinceaneras. As a teen I would take videos of my friends and I skateboarding, wrestling and doing ridiculous stunts. In my twenties I got more into music and film, around that time I was in a place of self discovery so I would smoke pot with my friends, listen to music, watch films and go to backyard shows in the Valley.. I didn’t know it at the time but those years of consuming so much art and subculture really influenced the type of artwork I do today. In my thirties I began to self reflect and self criticize where I was in my life, as most thirty year old’s do, lol. I started managing the Toluca Lake farmers market with a friend of mine on Sundays, our social media was not very active, so I decided to start taking images of the market and began uploading them to social media platforms. I eventually started getting praise for my images, which in turn encouraged me to take it seriously. Eventually, I decided to go back to school, since I felt I was naturally creative and wanted to expand my knowledge in photography and art. I graduated from Los Angeles Pierce College with my Associates in Photography with the help of some incredible professors who really challenged me to find my voice in photography. After that experience I decided to continue my studies in art at Arizona State University for my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography. Now I am a senior with some incredibly talented professors who make me think about the world and how my art contributes to it. I am currently working on finding my niche, which is currently very moody, vivid, dark and aesthetically striking portraits that I hope make audiences think and question the work I produce.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So many obstacles have been trying to hold me back from what is meant for me, whether it be people, situations, life events, censorship and even self sabotage. I am determined to prevail, they say when you are doing well at something you are passionate about, the devil sends hardships to take you off course but I know God got me. I believe what is meant for me will always stay and what is not, will simply fall off. All I can do is stay the course paved by my hard work and dedication. I specialize in compelling imagery that captures the essence of a moment through the interplay of light, shadow, and vivid color. Grounded in emotion and storytelling, my work uses contrast and atmosphere to build immersive worlds that transform both subject and viewer. By combining a sharp eye for aesthetics with technical precision, I create visually striking portraits designed to evoke perspective, provoke thought, and bring shared creative visions to life.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My artistic process blends conceptual, experimental, minimalist, and observational elements. Relying on intuition, I harness light, shadow, and vivid color to bring out the distinct qualities of my subjects, giving them a striking, surreal appearance. By weaving these characteristics together, I’ve cultivated a unique style and visual voice that reflects my personal commentary on the world around me.
