Hi Datboykalifa , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Datboykalifa born Kalifa J Lawson on October 30, 1988, in South Central Los Angeles, but I was raised out in the Inland Empire. Growing up, I wasn’t the popular kid I kept to myself, and music found me early. I got into it around age 11, bumping everything from Linkin Park to Lil Wayne, and that blend of sounds planted a seed that I didn’t even know would save my life later on. To be real, music pulled me out of some dark places. If it wasn’t for the booth and the pen, I honestly believe I’d be locked up or worse. So I officially started taking this serious in 2008, and by 2009 I had cut my very first single. That was the spark.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nah, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’ve come across many struggles being an independent artist, but the one I’ve struggled with the most was finding a solid team. So no, it was definitely not smooth, and learning is an everlasting process, so I’m still a student when I can be. If it’s something of value that I consider an asset, I’m tuned in. Like the great Nipsey Hussle said, I steal information, you don’t even gotta tell me!

On top of that, it was hard without having the budget to pay for marketing. I knew I had to hit the streets and the internet hard. I’ve been in real life situations like incarceration, family deaths, gang life, drugs, all of that. Fortunately, I was inspired before I was sentenced to prison, so it’s safe to say music literally saved my life. If I wasn’t inspired to write songs, I wouldn’t be alive.

But here’s the thing. Since I couldn’t afford a team, I had to become the whole team myself. I had to wear every hat: taking my own photos, editing my own videos, making my own cover art, handling all my own promotion. I’m a photographer, a content creator, a CEO, whatever it took. And honestly, that’s how I got my foot in the door. They wouldn’t let me in as just an artist, so I came in as a photographer instead. I started catching behind the scenes footage for major music video productions, covering red carpets, concerts, festivals, you name it. I hosted red carpets and even live streamed events to over 30k viewers.

I had to build relationships and get involved. I learned that sometimes you gotta sneak in through the side door to get to the main stage. Being a photographer wasn’t just a side hustle, it was my way in. And once I was in those rooms, I made sure they remembered my name. That’s how a self made artist from the Los Angeles keeps pushing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m Kalifa Lawson, known as Datboykalifa, a multifaceted artist, entrepreneur, and community mentor from South Central Los Angeles. My work spans music, photography, and business, all driven by a mission to break the cycle of generational struggle and create a lasting legacy for my four children.

As a musician, my catalog is a raw and honest reflection of my life, from incarceration and trauma to transformation and hope. It is therapy that saved my life, channeled into songs that connect with people who have faced similar battles. I have performed across California, building a loyal following one show at a time, and even won a contest to perform at Rolling Loud Los Angeles in March 2025.

Beyond the music, I am also a renowned celebrity photographer, capturing behind the scenes moments for major music video productions and red carpet events. This was not just a side hustle; it was my way in when doors would not open for me as an artist. I had to be self made, taking my own photos, editing my own videos, making my own cover art, and handling all my own promotion. I learned that sometimes you gotta sneak in through the side door to get to the main stage.

I am the founder of DaWinningTeam Entertainment, a company dedicated to supporting independent artists by giving them a platform to showcase their creations and talents. We specialize in capturing content for concerts, festivals, fashion shows, red carpet events, and music videos. My business helps the community by providing opportunities and a space where everyone is a winner, no matter how many followers they have. I say if you do not have film or pictures, it never happened.

What I am most proud of is not just the streams or the stages; it is the transformation. I have turned personal loss, including the passing of two siblings, into inspiration. I am no longer defined by my past; I am defined by the actions and choices I make every day. As a father and a community figure, I have become a role model, using my journey to uplift others, especially the younger generation, and show them that rehabilitation is not just possible; it is powerful I am one of the Music directors for Mental health through music and creative Arts Curated by myself and my Partner Kamelah Thompson The founder and director of EnvisionyouthServices inc. My story is even being chronicled in a documentary series called Breaking the Cycle, filmed and directed by Marcus Hood Founder of RelativeVisionTV.

What sets me apart is my authenticity and my grind. I wear every hat: songwriter, photographer, CEO, mentor, father, and I do it all without a big budget or a cosign. I am a student of the game, always learning, always stealing information like Nipsey said. I have had to be my own team, and that hustle is in every track, every photo, and every person I mentor. I am not just making music; I am building a movement. And I am just getting started.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. Never have. People see me on a stage or see my name popping up and they think I got lucky, but they don’t see the years of grinding, the doors slamming in my face, the sleepless nights figuring out how to make something out of nothing. Luck ain’t never handed me nothing. I’m just blessed, and my work ethic is unmatched. That’s the real difference.

And yeah, I won a contest to perform at Rolling Loud Los Angeles in March 2025. Some people might call that luck. I call it being prepared when opportunity showed up. I had been putting in the work for years, dropping music, building relationships, staying consistent. When that contest came around, I was ready. That’s what happens when your work ethic is unmatched. You position yourself so that when doors open, you’re already standing there.

So nah, I ain’t lucky. I’m blessed. And I work harder than anybody in the room. That’s how I got here, and that’s how I’m going further. Stay consistent no matter if you get 10 views or 10 million views—every win counts. And remember, learning won’t stop until you do. Never lower your expectations to meet your performance; higher your level of performance to meet your expectations, then do what is necessary to make your dreams a reality. That’s the code. That’s the grind. That’s Datboykalifa.
