Check Out Halford Fairchild’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Halford Fairchild.

Hi Halford, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am proprietor of Fairchild Tax Service (www.fairchildtaxservice.com), a family owned business since the 1940s.

I inherited the business from my mother, Yuri Hosoi Fairchild, who started the business to help friends and family with income tax filing. The business grew, under her leadership, from a few dozen clients to many hundreds.

In 1985, when Yuri was 75, she issued a “call for help,” and I answered the call. 1985 was my first year as Tax Preparer. It was also the year that I was battling UCLA for promotion to Associate Professor (with tenure) — in the Department of Psychology. At the time, I was also chairman of the BA and MA Programs in Afro-American Studies. I lost my battle for tenure (I was denied for politically impermissible speech — a critique of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982), and was terminated from my Assistant Professor position in 1986.

1986 was the year that I became President of The Association of Black Psychologists, so my departure from UCLA enabled me to travel to Washington, DC to service The ABPsi, and to work full time in the tax office during tax season.

From 1985 to 2004, I worked as Tax Preparer and was assisted by my mother, who made her Transition in 2004.

In 2005, we moved the business from my mother’s home in LaFayette Square (mid-city LA), and have been at 5352 West Pico from then until the present.

For most of those years, I worked the tax business while also holding down a full time teaching position at Pitzer College and the Claremont Colleges. In 2016, I retired from the teaching position and devoted all of my work life to the tax business.

Although I retired in 2016 from teaching, my last year of teaching challenged my students to research, write, and publish three books — which took two more years to complete the editing. These books were published in my last year of teaching and in the subsequent two years: (Re)Solving Violence in America (2016), Black Lives Matter: Lifespan Perspectives (2017), and Social Psychology and World Peace: A Primer (2018). In 2007 I embarked on a hobby, playing poker. The hobby culminated in an exciting finish — this year — at the World Series of Poker where I finished 4th in the “Millionaire Maker” tournament for a consolation prize of $530,000 (replays of the televised Final Table are on YouTube).

In 2014, I married Heather Feiga Fairchild, and we have worked the tax office as a husband and wife team since then.

Today, I continue preparing taxes, and playing poker.

My younger son, Marcus Griffin Fairchild, recently terminated his position as a Major in the U.S. Space Force, and will join me in the tax office in the coming years.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The main struggle juggling my time between being a full time professor at The Claremont Colleges and working the tax office.

My days were long – often 5:00 a.m. to midnight.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have dabbled in water color painting – to little or no renown.

I do some “spoken word,’ and have several pieces on my YouTube channel (under my name).

I have created works or art that are represented on coins, that I give away. One depicts the Earth’s Eastern and Western hemispheres with the words, “One Planet, One People, Please!” I call it the gift that keeps on giving — we give to just about anyone, and ask them to pass it on and have the recipient pass it on. Our hope is that if the coin can make it all the way around the world, there will be no more war.

The second depicts what I consider to be my important idea, to date: In a challenge to the “Big Bang” theory on the origins of the universe, my latest coin depicts a woman giving birth to the universe, with the words, “The Big Birth – 14 Billion Years Ago”; and on the reverse side are images of the Earth, Moon, distant galaxies and planets, with the words, “Women Will Save The Worlds.”
