Inspiring Conversations with Hugo Mayen of Dr.Tattoo Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Mayen.

Hi Hugo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“I’ve been in this industry since 1990, back when tattooing was still completely taboo. Like many artists from my generation, my earliest days involved a lot of raw experimentation and building my own machines out of sheer necessity. But I wanted the foundation and the discipline, so I sought out a proper studio apprenticeship. That changed everything. I’ve been tattooing full-time ever since, surviving the underground days and thriving now that the industry has completely blown up globally.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, but those struggles are exactly what made me the artist I am today. When I started in 1990, none of the modern tools or conveniences we take for granted existed. We didn’t have digital stencils or iPad apps, so we had to draw almost everything freehand and memorize typefaces by heart. Even our technical options, like the range of available inks, were incredibly limited. You had to be resourceful and rely purely on your artistic fundamentals just to survive. Navigating those early limitations, earning my formal apprenticeship, and constantly adapting as the industry grew into a mainstream phenomenon wasn’t easy—but it taught me a level of discipline and grit that has kept me thriving for over three decades.”
