Check Out Aaron Fitzpatrick’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Fitzpatrick.

Hi Aaron, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Making people laugh is something I have always wanted to do since I was a kid. Growing up in Houlton, Maine, a small town in Northern Maine, I tried to do everything I could do to perform in front of people. From Show Choir, Jazz Choir and School Musicals, and various other acting performances. Sometimes I would try to get friends in class to laugh, which definitely didn’t help with learning. While in Middle School a teacher gave me the last 5 minutes of class once a week to perform the Aaron show, as deal not to disrupt class for the rest of the week. In High School and Jr High, we did not really have an Improv or a theater classes, so I found my creative outlet through music, singing, and watching other people for dance steps. I was also playing Varsity sports, so keeping up with both kept me very busy. One Summer I was on a Cross-Country Road Hockey TV show Called Road Hockey Rumble which I played Goalie for Team America.

After graduating from High School I wanted to pursue acting and made my way to a small school in upstate New York called Elmira College. There I had opportunities to perform various comedic and dramatic roles. From Being the Lead Guido Contini in the Musical Nine, to being Brick, a lead in Cat in Hot Tin Roof. I also was able to continue singing and bringing comedic bits in an acapella Group called A1 and the Sauce. I also got to act in a few student short films. One on them is Called Tennis Movie, which can be found on YouTube. While at Elmira College I was not just performing on stage but was also working behind the scenes on various plays as a light and sound operator and stage construction.

Once out of College I bounced around to a few different areas of the Country. I worked as an assistant stage manager at The Downstairs Cabaret in Rochester, New York. I also taught at a traveling Hockey camp up and down the east coast for two summers. After being back in Houlton working a Potato Harvest on my cousin’s farm. I decided to visit my sister in Los Angeles for Christmas one year and never left.

In Los Angeles I found my comedy home and improv at the Mi Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica. I met so many great people through the improv community! As I progressed through classes and working as a light and sound operator, I found my comedic rhythm. I am an original member of the Improv Troupe Air Force Fun which performs regularly on Monday Nights at the Westside Comedy Theater for the last 11 years! I am also a member of the Musical Improv Team Rosé. Rosé held a Cage Match Title for almost a year and half! During the Pandemic I was fortunate enough to continue to perform Virtually as Part of the Mission Improvable Tour Company for Colleges all over the US. and now I am traveling to Colleges and Universities in person doing Hollywood Murder Mystery Shows and Pop Culture Trivia Called Nerdology and A short form show as a secret agent of comedy called Misson Improvable! I was also an ensemble member of Mission Improvable that does Shows at the Westside Comedy Theater. I have been able to continue doing Lights and sounds at the Westside Comedy theater throughout the years, making people laugh through funny songs or sound effects and lighting. I have been able to bring it all together when I became the Light and Sound Operator for the Comedy male revue called Thunder Bulge. With the right tech moves you can really bring a show to the next level. Which I love doing! And going to different venues for Thunder Bugle shows was always a fun challenge! Through Improv I have been able to work on some amazing projects such as The Purgation an indie horror film, and a YouTube Series Called Everybody Hates Hipsters.

Today you can find me performing with Air Force Fun at the Westside Comedy Theater on Resident House team Night on Mondays, followed by one of the best Improv Jams in the whole city later on Monday nights. I also have been invited to do various shows around Los Angeles, which is always a pleasure to do. I was just a part of the Holly Fringe Festival Show Called The Smokeout where I competed in rap battles as a character named Norm ‘ just a cool guy’ Smith. I have also play in a Starwars role playing Podcast for fun called Weekend Star Warriors. as an Gentleman Ewok name Wiffle Ball. In whatever show or project, I am working on I am always trying to make people laugh and have a good time!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road definitely was not smooth. I auditioned for years before I got on any Improv Teams. There were definitely some growing pains as an actor and performer, but I feel that those obstacles were helpful in improving my skills. Keeping a positive attitude can be hard sometimes when things don’t go your way. Celebrating the success of others is something we should strive to do. It is easier said than done but trying to not let fear hold you back, and following your gut is important.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am very proud of my Long Form team Air Force Fun. we are a team that has previous members go on and do incredible things, and all the iterations of the team from the beginning have been able to gel and perform at a high level for the last 11 years. During an Improv show it is likely that I will breakout into a song at any moment if given the opportunity. When up in the Tech Booth running lights and sounds, I feel like I can enhance the show for the booth. I have been working at the Westside Comedy theater for over 12 years and have watched a lot of comedy and Learning that comedy has many levels of funny always amazes me.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I feel like watching comedic movies growing up definitely helped shaped my humor. From Monty Python and Mel Brooks to Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. And Comedy Specials like Robin Williams and Mitch Hedberg.
