FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mother’s Search for Help Inspires Creation of Nationwide Resource Directory
Community advocate Connie King founded Black America Resource Directory to help families find answers and navigate life’s challenges. What began as one mother’s search for answers has grown into a nationwide effort to help individuals and families connect with trusted resources and opportunities.
In 2020, longtime community advocate Connie King founded Black America Resource Directory (B.A.R.D.), an online platform designed to connect people with resources related to housing, food assistance, healthcare, mental health, legal services, transportation, employment, caregiving, and wealth-building opportunities.
A graduate of California State University, Northridge with a degree in Sociology and Social Welfare, King has spent more than four decades serving communities through nonprofit leadership, youth development, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. However, it was a challenging experience involving a family member that inspired her to create a solution for others facing similar struggles.
“Like so many families, I turned to the internet looking for help and quickly realized how difficult it was to find clear answers,” King said. “If I was having trouble navigating the system, I knew other mothers were experiencing the same frustration. No one should have to suffer simply because they don’t know where to turn.”
Recently redesigned to improve accessibility and ease of use, the website has already received positive feedback from users. Comments include, “Easy access,” “I was able to find a resource quick and easy,” and “It looks great on my phone.” Others have praised the platform for making it easier to locate support without feeling overwhelmed.

Black America Resource Directory (B.A.R.D.) is a community resource and navigation hub designed to help people find and connect with free and low-cost services for everyday needs and difficult life situations. B.A.R.D. connects individuals and families to resources for housing, food, healthcare, mental health, legal assistance, employment, transportation, caregiving, education and other essential services.

B.A.R.D. partners with Findhelp, one of the nation’s largest social-care resource platforms, giving our users access to an extensive network of verified free and reduced-cost programs across the country. This partnership allows B.A.R.D. to focus not only on helping people find resources, but also on the challenges that often come after the search.

Created with the needs and experiences of Black communities in mind, B.A.R.D. is available to anyone seeking assistance. We provide a culturally responsive starting point for people who may not know where to turn or how to navigate complex systems.

Our vision goes beyond providing a list of organizations. B.A.R.D. is working to strengthen the entire journey from needing help, to finding help, to connecting with help—helping people identify appropriate resources, understand their next steps and ultimately determine whether they successfully connected with the services they needed.
