Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Robinson.
Hi Ebony, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started personal training in 2012, after working with a trainer myself and seeing firsthand how much that relationship could change a life. I began training clients on weekends while keeping my full-time job, until I had enough momentum to go full-time.
Pretty quickly, I noticed sessions becoming something more than reps and sets — clients would open up about their marriages, their jobs, their stress, their self-doubt. I was coaching bodies, but really coaching lives.
Having this understanding, I wanted to tie everything together and make it make sense. That growth pushed me back to school. I finished my bachelor’s in health education, then earned a master’s in psychology from Pepperdine, wanting to formally understand the mental and emotional side of work I was already doing instinctively.
Along the way, I also took on corporate roles that stretched my skill set — including serving as Studio Manager for a popular spin studio in San Diego; Associate Director of Fitness for a large nonprofit, where I oversaw a gym and a small grocery store. I began relationship coaching with a company while I was earning my masters degree. Even while building my own path, I was learning how to lead and operate at a bigger scale.
Today, that journey has become two things: Ebb and Flow Coaching & Consulting, where I do relationship coaching — individual, couples, group, and corporate consulting — and Law School Fitness, an online fitness app I run with my partner Law Collins, where we also provide corporate wellness programs and work with elders in nursing homes and senior centers.
Throughout the many chapters, I understood that this was about more than training bodies, it has always been about helping people grow fully in mind, body, and spirit.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I went through a divorce during this time and in that process my son who was 10 years old (now 17) and my ex-husband moved to a different state because of his job. That was devastating for me as a Mom, but I moved back to LA from San Diego where we all lived, I started grad school at Pepperdine, I was forging a new path. It was during this time that I understood that healing wasn’t linear and that I could be happy and sad at the same time. I was taking jobs that paid little to nothing just so that I could understand the industry and make connections. Money was tight but God kept making a way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m blessed to have two businesses that I love pouring into. Ebb & Flow Coaching and Consulting is a boutique coaching and consulting practice for people who are ready to stop going through the motions — in their lives, in their relationships, and with themselves. I work with individuals, couples, groups and offer corporate consulting for relationships in the workplace. What I’m know for and what sets me apart in this space is being real and raw without being rude, asking the tough questions that help people push past the bs and really start seeing themselves where they are and where they want to be.
LawSchool Fitness Innovation Center is a fitness app. We tailor workouts to your environment (home, gym, travels), create meal plans, and help people become their best selves with behavior change coaching. What LawSchool is known for and what sets us apart is the years of expertise between the two of us, the authentic gift that we have for helping people change their lives and see the best in themselves and pushing harder to get it. The dynamic between Law and I is like nothing you’ve ever seen before because we are both so passionate about what we do.
I am most proud of both of these brands because they have been built from a place of love. Love for people, community, and healing. We have been able to use decades of life experience to help pour into others and that shows in everything we do.
Both brands have something for everyone. We meet you where you are and the level of greatness doesn’t waiver.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Ohhh, being a risk taker for sure. Most people wait until everything feels ‘ready’ before they bet on an idea — enough capital, enough certainty, enough proof it’ll work. I’ve learned that waiting is usually just fear disguised by a well written, no action business plan. Building Ebb & Flow and Law School Fitness Innovation roughly at the same time (Ebb& Flow was a re-launch) looked hella reckless on paper — two businesses, two very different audiences, one from corporate wellness programs to senior centers. But betting on myself, betting on us before every piece was figured out is exactly what let both businesses actually take shape. The real risk was never the workload. The real risk would’ve been staying comfortable and never finding out what either idea could become.
