Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Rossi.
Hi Elena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
People often assume that I was born effortlessly orgasmic and ecstatic, hence my innate expertise on sex. Whenever someone mentions luck as the reason, I make sure to correct them. It is not luck. It is continuous dedication to self-work and personal development. A great love life is not something that randomly appears. It is carefully nurtured and cultivated.
My upbringing was far from sex-positive. I was born into a conservative Soviet Union family in the ‘80s. The subject of sex was avoided in Russian culture. As I entered puberty, no one in my family spoke to me about sex or how my body and my feelings were about to change. My only sex education was from slow-loading, highly pixelated porn sites of the late ‘90s. Just like the other teenage girls around me, I entered my sexual adult life horny and clueless.
When I was 20, a cute guy sat next to me in Economics class. The son of an Egyptian father and French mother, with sultry green eyes and a sexy French-Canadian accent; he was the heartthrob of our university. There was even a joke going around – “Which body part would you give up to date him?” (I offered my kidney.) When this guy asked me out, I couldn’t believe my luck.
I’ve had a lovely boyfriend before and had been sexually active since my late teens; however, from the first time this heartthrob and I had sex, I experienced sharp pain between my legs and a few days later had a burning yeast infection.
Embarrassed but yearning to keep him as my boyfriend, I continued to engage sexually with him even though it was painful each time. For months, I acted just like an enthusiastic girl in porn. I arched my back, cooed like a seductive kitty cat, and rolled my eyes back in (fake) pleasure. Both of us were mimicking porn, but only one of us was enjoying it.
Six months into the relationship my body shut down on me. I developed chronic vaginal inflammation and recurring yeast infections which sometimes left me unable to walk for days on end.
We broke up.
My body was left in pain.
My heart was left broken.
My ego was shattered.
While my heartthrob moved on to a new girl within a week, I embarked on a journey that would change my life forever. For the first 3 years, I stumbled from one doctor to the next and was given multiple diagnoses – vaginismus, dyspareunia, vulvodynia, pelvic floor tension, hypertonic pelvic floor, vaginal atrophy, chronic candida overgrowth, vaginal fissures, sexual PTSD. You name it, I apparently had it!
What I found most frustrating was that not a single doctor seemed assured of their own diagnosis. While my body looked healthy, the slightest touch on my vulva would evoke burning pain. Penetrative sex was impossible. Tampons were out of the question, it felt like being stabbed with a bread knife. I tried every medical therapy offered by the doctors— pills, creams, antibiotics, dilators, physiotherapy, microsurgery, hypnotherapy, laser treatment and traditional talking therapy. My parents drowned thousands of dollars in hospitals and private practices. Nothing was helping. The pain persisted for years. Depression and emotional isolation crept in. I felt helpless and alone.
So what does my career have to do with all of this?
Around year 4 of my chronic pain journey, I made a decision that I would not allow the pain to eclipse my yearning for a normal life and romantic love. I took matters into my own hands and stopped chasing doctors for answers. Instead, I dove into learning about alternative healing practices – Conscious Sexuality, Non-penetrative Sex, The Art of Sensual Lovemaking, Tantra, Holotropic Breathwork, Trauma Release Exercises (TRE), Somatic Bodywork and Fascia Release, Yoni Massage, Inner Child Healing, Meditation, Body De-armoring, Yoga, Plant Medicine, Childhood Trauma Healing, Hormone-free Contraception and Autoimmune Diet Protocols.
The more I applied my newly collected knowledge and experience, the better my life became. I started to heal. I began to notice how deeply our sexuality is intertwined with our lives. The better I felt, the more I craved sharing my newfound knowledge with others. Why wasn’t lovemaking taught in schools? How come more people don’t know about conscious sexuality? Why is modern sex lacking in tenderness and connection? Why are sensuality and pleasure not an important part of a Sexology degree curriculum? How does childhood trauma show up in our sex lives?
Fast forward many years, and here I am writing a series of books about nurturing sex. I hold degrees in Psychology, Business, Entrepreneurship and Leadership. I’ve been studying and practicing Conscious Sexuality for 15+ years. My online educational content is followed by thousands of women worldwide. I run coaching and healing bodywork programs and support women with sexual trauma, chronic vaginal pain, libido and orgasm struggles. Most importantly, I teach the art of nourishing lovemaking.
Years of pain and suffering have become my initiation as a healer. I found meaning in my pain – it gifted me the motivation to heal my body, untangling it from years of trauma and conditioning. Pain pushed me into authentic sexual relating and a deeper understanding of the purpose of sex in our lives. Most importantly, pain gifted me my life’s purpose – to spread the message of sacred sexual tenderness and connection.
I turned my pain into my greatest gift, and I share that gift with women daily.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge that I encounter in my work is de-funking the deep conditioning we all receive around sex – the idea that the best sex is usually at the beginning of every relationship, also known as the honeymoon period. Once the honeymoon period fades, everyone panics and tries everything possible to get this spark back.
I believe that there is a whole world of consistent pleasure and desire “beyond the spark”. This is a world of safety – emotional connection, trust, commitment, vulnerability and being seen. Safety is the foundation of the female libido. When we de-center novelty and chemistry from our sex lives, and instead, concentrate on emotional connection and safety, everything changes. Every single body, no matter how beautiful it is, will eventually become boring. Every initial chemistry will fade no matter how hot the sex was.
Therefore, the answer to a great sex life is not to bring back “the spark” but to learn to be aroused by safety and connection. And this is what I help people with. There is no limit to how safe one can feel. There is no limit to the dept of connection you can have with someone.
The couples who are the most fulfilled in their sex lives are usually not the couples who have the hottest bodies or are hyper sexual in their adventures. They are usually couples who are quietly deepening their relationship and nurturing each other day by day. Those are the couples whose libidos don’t disappear, even 10, 20 years into the relationship. They are the couples with effortless desire and deep orgasms.
