Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Porter.
Hi Hunter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one just like the majority of musicians I’m around these days. I started out in bands, one started to take off and had aspirations of making it. A record deal was waved under our noses when I was 18 but we decided to pass because the terms were so terrible. Another group disbanded because the guys followed other passions. I got picked up by another band and went on the road for a while, saw the country coast to coast. For a long time I imagined my music career as a plane getting ready for take-off, and my time on the road felt the air pressure was getting high enough to get the wheels off the ground.
But like a lot of us have seen in the industry, consistent work is a hard commodity to come by. So a few years back I’ve worked to build up my songwriting in the sync and publishing world. In 2023 I worked with a small agency out of New York that has landed me a few placements domestic and internationally. This past year I was fortunate enough to work with my first international client; Fm Records, based out of Rome. Not the altitude I had envisioned for myself but hey, we’re flying. And for now that’s enough.
My identity as a musician is constantly fluctuating between guitarist, artist, and producer/songwriter. Acting on these things as a though they were necessary to my survival has launched me to where I’m at today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think learning to adapt to whatever the work dictates took a while for me. I can be stubborn (shoutout my fellow tauruses) with my perspective regarding music, so learning to be more fluid and that more often than not my viewpoint is incredibly biased. For my own songwriting, it’s been about allowing the songs to just be what they are until their totally finished before passing judgement on them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in the music industry as a touring and session guitarist, a songwriter, producer, and artist. I specialize in Alternative Rock and other Rock sub-genres. I’m most proud of the songs I put out years ago and forgot about because, regardless of my feelings towards them (whether negative or positive) they exist in the world and have been used by people I’ve never met to soundtrack a moment in time. How insane is that?
What matters most to you?
Authenticity. and “feel”.
When I pick up a guitar, when I sing, when I write; I want to get to something that resonates to my very core because that’s what makes me feel most present and the closest to flow state. It’s the most alive I’ll ever be.
