Rising Stars: Meet Lucine Kaplan of Philadelphia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucine Kaplan.

Hi Lucine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2013, as a high school senior in the Advanced Art Class, my teacher came up with the technical concept of Nylons on Hook, but didn’t quite know how to execute it. Out of the 7 of us in class, no one could really grasp it. But I nailed it, stuck with it, won a bunch of awards within those first couple of months and have evolved the techniques to what you see today, Nylons on VELCRO Brand (R) Hook (Ad). I source my Nylons today through lots of donations from Women, Performers, and Hosiery Companies all over the world and dye the fabric to my own colors.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Discovering each new step in evolution of my technique has come with it’s challenges. There’s no one else in the world who creates art in this way. I am creating the blueprint, there’s no guide. While, my artwork is now a part of the history of hosiery. I indend for this artwork to be around long after my lifetime, so the longevity and durability of my work is most important to master.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Nylons, Pantyhose, Tights, Fishnets, Hose, Stockings, otherwise known as my fiber art medium. The majority of my material is donated by Women, Performers, and Hosiery Companies worldwide. I stretch, rip, cut, pull, dye and stick the fiber onto my hand-made canvas of VELCRO Brand (R) Hook (Ad) using scissors and tweezers. Subjectively through my career, I have focused on feminism and womanhood. My lifelong research project is called “Ripping the Seams” which pairs the history of hosiery with feminist dialogue dating all the way back from 200 A.D. to fashion today with collections released in chapters and paired with poetry that I write.
I am often hired for commissions and find myself pretty busy with those. My studio is now housed within my family’s business, a yoga studio in Bucks County, PA and I am exercising more abstract subjects, allowing my medium to hold the conceptual meaning, capturing emotion in the fibers, shapes, and colors.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I study myself the most. All the way to my childhood artworks.
