Daily Inspiration: Meet Gus Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gus Harper.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a full time artist living in Venice and I maintain a studio at the Santa Monica airport. I sold my first painting when I was 17 years old and became a full time artist by the age of 27. I have spent the past several years traveling the world and working in Los Angeles creating paintings and murals. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an unpredictable road. I never thought I’d have a studio in Chiang Mai, Thailand where I’d work a month or two every year. Or that I would create murals In places like Laos and Sri Lanka. There are lots of ups and downs but it has been a mostly positive trajectory.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make paintings that I describe as celebrations of our collective spiritual journey. Most of my imagery is vibrant and celebratory with a few exceptions. While I am mostly known for my works on canvas I have also have made several murals around the world including a 17′ x 700′ mural in Malibu Canyon. I think I’m most excited about the fact that while there is a common thread throughout my work I can still say that my themes and aesthetics have evolved quite a bit over the years.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I am actually one of the people who truly loves Los Angeles. I’m proud to be from this area. I love that there is such an accessible art scene here and that creativity is venerated.
