Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Intelligator.
Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I entered UCLA as an undergraduate majoring in art. I intended to become a fashion photographer. However, after a few months, I was so disillusioned by the art program that I switched my major from art to English. After graduating in three years, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. Although I had no intention of becoming a lawyer, I decided to go to law school because I believed it was a good degree to have. After graduating from law school, I took the Bar exam and passed. I still had no interest in practicing law. I needed a job. I had zero exposure to family law outside of the rudimentary understanding of community property law I studied in preparation for the Bar exam. My mom is a family law attorney. She knew another family law attorney who was looking for a part-time associate. I started working in family law entirely by accident. Close to twenty years later, I’m still practicing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first “bump” along the road came about five years into my practice of family law. I was working for a small botique firm and absolutely hated it. I left the firm hoping to forge a new career path. I maintained a few clients so I could pay the bills. As I began practicing family law on my own, I realized that I had spent the previous five years loathing the practice of law because I was not practicing it in a way that aligned with my personal moral philosophies. Having taught yoga for close to 20 years, yogic philosphy and teaching very much informed the way I practiced law. I realized that by bridging my two worlds, I could practice family law in a far more fulfilling and meaningful way. I coined the term “Holistic Divorce and Family Law” to describe my style of practice and started practicing family law in a way that felt more authentically me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Law Offices of Sarah A. Intelligator, P.C.?
I practice family law. I coined the term “Holistic Divorce and Family Law” to describe the unique way I practice family law. In addition to fulfilling all of my ethical obligations to my clients, I find it deeply important to honor the human experience particularly inextricable to family law. Family law litigants are normal people, most of whom have never needed or expected to need an attorney. They are placing their trust in a complete stranger at a time when they are extremely vulnerable. I have tremendous respect for this and do my best to ensure that I care for the human being wholistically.
In 2023, I published my first book, “Live, Laugh, Find True Love: A Step-By-Step Guide to Finding a Meaningful Relationship.” The book is a divorce attorney’s guide to AVOIDING divorce. Using the patterns I have seen over the course of my practice as a didactic of what NOT to do, I suggest ways in which people can find a meaningful, fulfilling and long-lasting relationship–and most importantly, not end up in my office.
I have also recently authored a Substack in which I explore various topics related to relationships, parenting and health.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m a mother to two young boys, so I have tremendous empathy and understanding for separating parents. My focus is always on what is best for the children involved.
