Check Out Courtney Cronin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Cronin.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved writing, reading, and music. But when I enrolled in a conservatory to pursue my Bachelor of Music, I immediately felt like all creative pursuits other than singing were looked down upon and referred to disparagingly as a “fallback.” My classmates were often steered away from things they loved, such as acting, dancing, or even auditioning for musical theatre because it was implied they lacked dedication to their classical training.

After graduating, I met so many people who attended conservatories and shared that same experience. During the pandemic, when live performance was indefinitely paused, many of us rediscovered our love of writing, drawing, and creating beyond music. In the years since, I’ve watched my colleagues open Etsy shops, publish books and blogs, and share everything from illustrations to calligraphy. It reminded me that musicians often express themselves through many different artistic outlets, and those talents deserve to be applauded, not suppressed!

That’s why I created Composition Corner: a place where musicians can showcase all of their creativity across writing, art, design, and more. By sharing projects, resources, and stories, I want to help musicians push back against the outdated belief that focusing on more than one discipline is a weakness, and celebrate the work they create both on and off the stage.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finding the right audience has been one of the biggest challenges because Composition Corner is a unique community with a very specific mission. The vision has also evolved over time as I’ve learned more about what musicians are looking for and how I can best support them. Building it alongside a full-time job has required me to be intentional with my time and priorities, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see the community continue to grow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My perspective as a creative changed dramatically after a serious health crisis in 2019. It forced me to slow down and reevaluate what truly mattered to me, both personally and professionally. In the performing arts world, there’s often an expectation that “the show must go on,” even when it’s at the expense of your own well-being. That’s a toxic mindset I’ve never agreed with. I believe artists are people first, and taking care of ourselves should never be seen as a weakness.

Today, I’m most proud of building Composition Corner into a community that reflects those values. While many platforms focus solely on performance, I wanted to create one that recognizes the whole artist. What sets me apart is my belief that being a dedicated musician and having other passions are not mutually exclusive. I don’t define myself just as a singer, but as a writer and a reader and a marketer and a cat mom! That perspective has shaped both my career and the community I’m building through Composition Corner.
