Life & Work with Emily Colvin of Los Angeles / OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Colvin.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to making things with my hands, but it wasn’t until my thirties that I committed to building a career as an artist. I taught myself by experimenting with glass, paint, and light, developing a process that felt entirely my own. Over the past decade I’ve built Projects At Large, creating sculptures, paintings, and installations while learning the realities of running a creative business. Today, I’m the Artist-in-Residence at Hotel Figueroa in Los Angeles, where I’m continuing to explore how art can transform the spaces we live in.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Building an art career requires resilience. There are long periods of uncertainty, rejection, financial pressure, and constant problem-solving. I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding those moments, it’s about continuing to make the work anyway. Every challenge has pushed me to become a better artist and a stronger business owner.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create paintings and sculptures that explore light, color, and transformation. Glass is at the center of my practice because it changes with its environment and invites people to slow down and see familiar spaces differently. I’m especially interested in creating work that feels immersive and emotionally resonant. What I’m most proud of is building my practice independently and staying committed to developing a distinct visual language while expanding into hospitality, public art, and large-scale installations.
