Community Highlights: Meet Dominic Dickfoss of Global Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Dickfoss.

Hi Dominic, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in diverse South Sacramento with a college basketball background followed by coaching 7-8 years a high level AAU team out of Sac (Pocket Jr. Kings). Prior to coaching, I graduated from Sac State with loving support from my parents sister and family.

In my mid 20’s my friend Jamal Siurano moved in with me. He was a high level Saxophone player who started a band while living with me, ICONOCLAST ROBOT. Jamal asked me several times if I would be their manager because he saw something in me I didn’t see yet. I declined several times but because I knew how talented he was, former Sax player in B-Side Players, plus my dad encouraging me to go check them out, I decided to go to a rehearsal. I grew up idolizing Tupac, the hip hop and R&B movement but never was into live music other than reggae bands. I was always attracted to culture. After that first band rehearsal I witnessed, I didn’t miss a rehearsal for 2 straight years. The way they fused hip hop, rock and jazz was beyond special and inspiring. (Ryan, Pat, Russell, Jamal and Jairus).

I managed them for a number of years and we won a SAMMIE Award in Sac for best Hip-Hop band, but the band split up due to key members moving to a different state. In the early stages of managing this band, I met Vokab Kompany from San Diego when we opened for them at Harlow’s Night Club in Sacramento around 2010. A few years later, Vokab co-founder, Matt Burke aka Burkey said I should move to San Diego to broaden my horizons. I literally sold my dream car at the time, recently paid off, and moved to San Diego, to live with Burkey’s manager Ian Xavier (Grand Artique), in a box truck with my 2 pups Snoop and Cookie Monster in 2013. Best decision of my life!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When you are driving to places that nobody in your world has ever driven, the roads will rarely be smooth or easy. I didn’t have a map. I was literally following my intuition and passion to evolve. Not having a solid job and trying to figure out my lane was challenging but I was born for it. I was the 1st person in my entire family to move out of Sacramento. I never took traditional routes in life because they weren’t as exciting for me to follow. Living with Ian, I got involved with the festival circuit doing all types of creative gigs at these festivals. We would work 10-15 festivals per year plus go to Burning Man every year. Relying on income from working the festival circuit to pay bills can be tricky, to say the least haha.

Over these formidable years I honed in with my tribe. The grit and grind of being on the road, building community and experiences at each stop can be exhausting yet fulfilling. We would basically bring an “Eco Village” to these festivals and pass out Fair Trade Organic products at our parties from brands who we aligned. Throwing parties (within the festivals) while passing out organic products to the people was absolutely incredible! It was never easy but always worth it because it helped mold me into who I am.

Tim Clark and Ryan Black were my mentors and big brothers in life and creating these Eco Village experiences. Collectively we ended up creating a Non-Profit called THE TRI (Tree). THE TRI gave us the opportunity to accept sponsorship $ from the brands we were representing so we can continue creating these experiences. Ryan is the founder and CEO of SAMBAZON Acai. He and brother Jeremy Black brought acai into America in 2000. He also saw something special in me because he ended up offering me a Full Time job at SAMBAZON. It has been an honor to be there currently close to 10 years, representing the pioneer brand of Organic Fair Trade foods. SAMBAZON, DR. BRONNER’S, NUMI TEA, to name a few of the brands we represented through THE TRI. My personal lifestyle perfectly aligned with the values of these brands.

Working with SAMBAZON during days gave me opportunity, to start working with DJs who I was already working with, to not have to stress on paying my bills through events, instead I could pay the DJs higher rates and throw dope events. One of the challenges I encountered was representing artists within the festival circuit. While there were many inspiring individuals. I found that some of these artists carried an energy and lifestyle that didn’t align with my vision I wanted to build. I din’t want to invest my passion and dedication into a sinking ship. Over time, I realized I was most passionate about working with talented, hungry DJs/Producers/Artists who were looking to create, inspire, build and expand together.

That realization ultimately led to the birth of GLOBAL. THERAPY in December 2022. Before the pandemic 2018/19/20 we had became deeply inspired by the South African genre, Amapiano that quickly became a global movement. We started watching documentaries on the genre and all the genres before Ama. As GT began to take shape, that influence became part of the foundation. Our collective now plays a wide variety of music from all over the Afro Diaspora such as Afrohouse, Afrotech, Gqom, 3-Step Afrobeats, Baile Funk, Dancehall and more. At end of the day, our crew plays music that transcends borders, integrating culture and unforgettable experiences. We are extremely proud and grateful for our crew. Watching them all blossom is a great honor.

We’ve been impressed with Global Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
First of all, there would be no GLOBAL THERAPY without our San Diego Community. There is NO higher vibe community that welcomes all cultures to vibe, dance and experience new kind of therapy. There are also several other crews in SD who are conduits of the culture and we all support each other. Something that separates this city from every other city. We are extremely proud of our community and DJs/Producers/Artists. At the end of the day it is a blast building this platform for the community and our team. We are proud and grateful to collaborate with all the amazing crews. Collaborating and building energy with the movement together is very important to us.

Myself, Maki Mark and Messiah (EFROH ENT) all 3 co-founded and started GT together. Both of them are from Nairobi, Kenya. We came up with the name and idea in December ’22 and had our first event in April 2023 in Chula Vista. From the very first event, we decorated the event space with vibrant fabrics wrapping the stage and venue. We also set up a beautiful African hand painted art display created by Sally 🙂 I think she sold 2 pieces that night. Intention and vibes were set! Maki and Messiah are 2 of the most incredible humans you will ever meet! Make it a priority to connect with these legends.

Global Therapy is a collective of artists who specialize in immersive party experiences, from festival takeovers, brand events, regular event booking. production while integrating culture through the rhythms and vibes to heal thy soul. Our goal is to bridge global sounds through unforgettable live experiences. We strive to entertain while introducing our audiences to the diverse corners of music.

Other than our crew themselves, we are extremely proud to have thrown our 1st festival in 2025 in San Diego. at Waterfront Park in full collaboration with AFROPANDA ENT. and PLURAL MUSIC. AFRODIASPORA FESTIVAL was the 1st of its kind in San Diego. We brought TXC from South Africa, BLVK H3RO, MYSTA CROOKS, ANDRE POWER and more to the stage with African vendors, artists and food. This was huge for the city and community. We throw several AFRODIASPORA pre parties throughout the year and plan to throw the festival annually. Next Festival coming 2027!

We are super proud of the producers/DJs in our crew who put in so much time and dedication and for fully representing our Global Therapy Takeovers at SSBD Festival last year and at SXSW in Texas at OWN HQ in ’26. SAMBAZON sponsored GT to bring MANGO and GINGER to healdline with our crew of 7 other DJS at SXSW. Full circle moment.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I really paid attention to different crews throughout the years who I witnessed organically establishing themselves as a collective and movement. Even if they were different genres or cultures from what GT does. I learned alot from how Soulection took over the world with their sound and DJS. If any of their DJs traveled, they repped the Collective. They were a big pioneer in building a worldwide collective of DJs and a movement.

Being in the festival culture for many years, I saw the House and Techno crew, Desert Hearts begin their careers to throwing their own festivals with 12k+ people. Even though it wasn’t necessarily my style of music, it was beautiful to experience them grow. Now you see them on a huge health is wealth lifestyle on their well established platform. HEALTH IS WEALTH and that is one of the most important messages I want to send….I watch all the Youtube series such as Kunye, Descendants, Dankie Rooms, Boiler Room, Sondela and many more. Following my heart living the dream!
