Today we’d like to introduce you to Mustafa Eken.
Hi mustafa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began in Türkiye, where I studied Sports Science and developed a deep interest in human movement, rehabilitation, and performance. From an early age, I was fascinated not only by fitness itself, but by how exercise could completely change a person’s quality of life — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Over the past 16+ years, I’ve worked with a wide variety of individuals, including athletes, seniors, people recovering from injuries, and clients with mobility limitations. Throughout my career, I focused heavily on corrective exercise, posture improvement, flexibility, balance, and functional strength training. I’ve always believed fitness should be adapted to the individual rather than forcing everyone into the same system.
One of the most meaningful moments in my career came from helping a client regain movement in a leg that had been inactive for many years. Experiences like that reinforced why I love this profession — not simply for physical transformation, but for restoring confidence and hope.
After moving to the United States, I continued building my career as a personal trainer in Washington, D.C., working with clients from many different backgrounds and age groups. The transition was not always easy. Like many immigrants, I faced uncertainty, cultural adaptation, financial pressure, and the challenge of rebuilding life from the beginning. However, those experiences also made me stronger, more patient, and more connected to the people I work with every day.
Today, I continue working as a trainer and corrective exercise specialist while also developing creative projects outside the gym. I enjoy combining fitness, education, storytelling, photography, travel, and digital content creation. Recently, I created a multilingual Central Park guide project designed to help visitors experience New York City in a more meaningful and educational way.
What motivates me most is helping people improve their lives — whether through movement, encouragement, recovery, or simply making them believe in themselves again. I still see myself as someone who is learning, growing, and trying to create a positive impact on one person at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many people who try to build a life and career in a new country, I faced many personal and professional challenges along the way.
Moving to the United States meant starting over from zero in many ways. Even with years of experience, certifications, and knowledge, rebuilding trust, creating a client base, adapting to a different culture, and finding stability took time and patience. There were moments of uncertainty, financial pressure, exhaustion, and emotional stress. At times, balancing work, immigration-related challenges, and personal responsibilities felt overwhelming.
Professionally, working in the fitness industry also comes with its own difficulties. Every client has unique physical limitations, fears, injuries, or emotional struggles. Some people come to you after years of pain, lack of confidence, or failed experiences. That responsibility can be heavy because you genuinely want to help them improve safely and effectively.
I’ve also experienced setbacks and disappointments in my career. There were opportunities I worked very hard for that did not go as planned, and moments where I questioned myself. But over time, I realized that growth often comes from difficult periods rather than comfortable ones.
At the same time, those struggles shaped me into a more patient, understanding, and compassionate coach. They taught me resilience and helped me connect more deeply with people from different backgrounds. Today, when I work with someone who feels discouraged or stuck, I understand that feeling personally — and I think that makes me a better trainer and mentor.
I still believe in staying positive, continuing to learn, and moving forward step by step. For me, success is not only about achievements or titles; it’s about continuing despite the obstacles and still trying to make a positive impact on others.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist with a strong focus on helping people move better, feel stronger, and improve their overall quality of life. Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of clients — from complete beginners to older adults, individuals recovering from injuries, and people with mobility or neurological challenges.
My specialization is not only traditional fitness training, but also corrective exercise, posture improvement, flexibility, balance, mobility, functional strength, and recovery-focused programs. I enjoy designing highly individualized programs because I believe every person’s body, history, and needs are different. Instead of forcing clients into one style of training, I adapt the training around the person.
I’m especially known for my patience, detailed observation, and ability to work with people who may feel intimidated by gyms or discouraged by past experiences. Many of my clients come to me because they want a coach who truly listens and creates a safe, supportive environment. I also work extensively with adults over 50 and clients dealing with pain, instability, or movement limitations.
One of the things I’m most proud of is helping people regain confidence in themselves through movement. In one particularly meaningful case, I worked with a client who regained movement in a leg that had been inactive for many years. Seeing that kind of transformation reminded me that fitness can be about much more than appearance — it can restore hope, independence, and dignity.
Beyond training sessions themselves, I’m proud of the trust and long-term relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many of them stay connected with me for years, recommend me to family members and friends, and continue working with me because they feel genuinely supported.
What sets me apart is probably the combination of technical knowledge, empathy, creativity, and adaptability. I approach training not only as exercise, but as problem-solving. I pay attention to small details, movement quality, emotional comfort, and long-term sustainability rather than quick fixes.
Outside the gym, I’m also passionate about education, storytelling, photography, travel, and creating digital projects. I enjoy combining creativity with wellness and finding ways to inspire people both physically and mentally.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me in several different ways depending on their goals and needs.
I currently offer personal training, corrective exercise, mobility and flexibility sessions, recovery-focused training, and functional fitness programs for adults of different ages and fitness levels. I work both in-person and through customized guidance and program design. Many of my clients are people who want a more personalized and supportive approach rather than a one-size-fits-all fitness experience.
I especially enjoy helping:
* Adults over 50
* People recovering from injuries or long periods of inactivity
* Clients working on posture, balance, mobility, and coordination
* Individuals who feel intimidated by traditional gym culture
* People looking to build sustainable healthy habits
I’m also open to collaborating on wellness, fitness, education, and creative media projects. Over time, I’ve developed an interest in combining fitness with storytelling, travel, photography, and digital content creation. I enjoy projects that inspire, educate, or positively impact people’s lives.
People can also support my work by following and sharing my projects online, recommending my services to others, or simply connecting and sharing ideas. I believe meaningful opportunities often begin through genuine human connections and collaboration.
At the core of everything I do is the desire to help people improve their lives — physically, mentally, and emotionally — in a realistic and compassionate way.
