Exploring Life & Business with Beatriz Vaquer of DIY Pet Self Wash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatriz Vaquer.

Hi Beatriz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
For more than 25 years I have worked in the pet care industry. I started my career in Miami, Florida, where I was one of the first people to offer Mobile Pet Grooming services in the area. From the beginning I was passionate about working directly with dogs and providing a professional service that made life easier for their owners.

About six years ago I moved to Los Angeles, California, where I continued working as a professional groomer and resumed my mobile grooming business. Over time, while working in this field, I began to notice that something was missing in the market. Mobile grooming offers great convenience because the service is done directly at the client’s home, but precisely because of that convenience it is usually more expensive and not always accessible for everyone.

I always had the dream of creating something that could also generate a positive impact in the community, especially for families who love their pets but are looking for a more affordable way to keep them clean and well cared for between professional grooming sessions.

That idea led to the creation of DIY Pet Self-Wash. I wanted to create a space where people could come with their dogs and bathe them themselves in a clean, comfortable, and professionally equipped environment, but at affordable prices. At the same time, I wanted it to be an experience where owners could connect and strengthen the bond with their dogs during the process.

Today, three years after opening our doors, DIY Pet Self-Wash has become well established in the community and continues to grow. Every day we welcome new clients, and something I truly enjoy is watching owners interact with their dogs during the process. It’s incredibly heartwarming to see them talking to their dogs while bathing them, saying things like “we’re almost done,” “good boy,” “good girl,” or “you’re looking so handsome.” These small moments are full of affection and really show the love people have for their pets.

After so many years of being the one directly grooming the dogs, I now also have the opportunity to step back and witness these special moments between people and their pets, and it’s truly a beautiful thing to see.

In addition to DIY Pet Self-Wash, I continue working in professional grooming, combining both experiences within an industry that has always been my passion.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, the journey has been very positive. From the beginning, the concept of DIY Pet Self-Wash was very well received by the community, and people quickly understood the value of having a clean, professional space where they could bathe their dogs themselves at an affordable price.
Like any new small business, the biggest challenge in the beginning was simply building awareness and growing the customer base. It takes time for people to discover a new concept and incorporate it into their routine. The first few years require patience, consistency, and a lot of personal involvement.

However, over time the business has grown steadily through word of mouth and loyal clients who return regularly. One thing that has been especially rewarding is the feedback from our customers. For the past two years in a row, we have received the “People Love Us on Yelp” recognition, and we have also received hundreds of positive reviews on Google.

We have also built a community of more than 10,000 followers on Instagram, where many of our clients enjoy sharing their experiences and photos of their dogs after their baths.

Seeing the community embrace the concept and watching new clients continue to walk through the door has been very rewarding, and it confirms that the idea behind DIY Pet Self-Wash truly resonates with pet owners.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
DIY Pet Self-Wash is a self-service dog wash space designed to give pet owners a clean, comfortable, and professional environment where they can bathe their dogs themselves. The idea behind the business is simple: many people love taking care of their pets but don’t always have the right space or equipment at home to do it easily.
At DIY Pet Self-Wash we provide professional grooming tubs, high-quality shampoos, dryers, towels, and all the tools needed so owners can bathe their dogs without the stress and mess of doing it at home. Our goal is to make the experience easy, affordable, and enjoyable for both the dog and the owner.
What makes our business special is the experience itself. It’s not just about washing a dog; it’s about the moment between the owner and their pet. Many of our clients talk to their dogs while bathing them, praise them, and treat the whole process as a bonding moment.
Over time, DIY Pet Self-Wash has become part of the local pet-loving community. We are proud to have hundreds of positive reviews on Google, recognition from Yelp with the “People Love Us on Yelp” award for two consecutive years, and a growing community of more than 11k followers on Instagram.
For us, the most meaningful part of this work is creating a place where people feel comfortable bringing their dogs and leaving with a happy, clean pet, often after sharing a special moment with their best friend.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing the joy that people experience when they come to DIY Pet Self-Wash with their dogs. It’s very special to watch families walk through the door together and bathe their dog as a team. You can see everyone involved, smiling, helping each other, and enjoying the moment, including the dog.

I also love seeing parents come in with their children and watching the kids take the lead in bathing their dogs. It’s beautiful to see them being gentle, patient, and proud of taking care of their pet while the parents watch or help.

Moments like these are simple but very meaningful. Seeing the dog leave clean and happy, and the family leaving with smiles on their faces, is something that truly makes me happy and reminds me why I love what I do.
