Today we’d like to introduce you to Moustafa El Shaabini.
Hi Moustafa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Photography has always been a part of my life, almost like a second nature. Growing up with a background in the arts, I was drawn to capturing moments through the lens of a camera. As a child, I would often take pictures of friends and family, and it wasn’t long before people started encouraging me to turn my passion into a profession.
In 2016, I took the leap and began building my photography portfolio. Within a few years, what started as a hobby evolved into a regular pursuit. By 2020, I took a significant step and founded Paradise Photography OC, dedicating myself to photography full-time. That first year was pivotal—I connected with the Mission Viejo Chamber of Commerce, which helped me network and grow my business. I also had the pleasure of working with young, local talent, mentoring budding photographers, and opening up new opportunities.
As my business grew, I began collaborating with the city of Mission Viejo on various events and projects, from family photography to supporting local businesses. Gradually, Paradise Photography OC became a recognized name in the community. By 2022, my efforts were acknowledged by the Mission Viejo Chamber of Commerce, which honored me with the Inspirational Member of the Year award. That same year, I was thrilled to receive the Best Photographer Award from the Trabuco Canyon Awards Program.
A defining moment came in 2023 when one of my photos was featured in New York Times Square for National Down Syndrome Day, in collaboration with Gigi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center. It was a monumental moment that underscored the impact of my work.
Throughout this journey, I’ve embraced every opportunity, experimented with various photography styles, and learned the importance of saying ‘yes’ to new challenges. This mindset has pushed me to continuously improve my craft. I am humbled and grateful to have received the Best Photographer Award in Trabuco Canyon for the past four years and to have been inducted into the Business Hall of Fame.
Looking back, I feel incredibly blessed and excited for what the future holds. Photography is not just my profession; it’s my passion and a way to connect with the world around me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey into photography has not always been a smooth road, and I’ve encountered several challenges along the way. One of the initial hurdles was the expense associated with photography equipment. It’s an investment-heavy field, and starting out, I had to be resourceful. I began with a used camera that I purchased from Facebook Marketplace and took on as many shoots as possible to gradually upgrade my gear.
Another significant challenge was learning to navigate the business side of photography. While I was passionate about taking photos, understanding how to run a business was a different ballgame. It involved learning about marketing, client management, and financial planning—all skills that were new to me.
Additionally, mastering the technical aspects of photography, such as using the equipment and understanding lighting, required a lot of trial and error. Each of these challenges taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow both personally and professionally. They pushed me to be adaptable and persistent, ultimately shaping the photographer and business owner I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
