Conversations with Perk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perk.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up in North Carolina, I always dreamed of moving to California. Like so many others, I packed up the car and moved to Hollywood, and began my musical journey at Musician’s Institute where I studied guitar. Since that time, I’ve been in in many bands, but really found my stride as a solo roots rock artist. I’ve also been a music teacher for the past 10 years, and love to help others discover the magic of playing a musical instrument.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a musician is never a smooth road, and I’ve certainly had my share of ups and downs. I remember playing bass in a band, and we had a headlining slot at a big club in West Hollywood on a Saturday night…only to have the guitar player show up without his guitar! Yes, he left it at home, and we weren’t about to play our set because no one else had a left-handed guitar! I’ve also had beers sprayed on me from rowdy fans, and some altercations with other bands. However, the satisfaction of performing original music far outweighs the negative aspects.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer/songwriter, and have released two albums as well as three singles…with another song on the way very soon! My style is best described as “California Roots Rock” and I usually play all the instruments on my recordings.

What makes you happy?
When someone tells me that one of my songs had a positive impact on them, and made them feel better that makes me the happiest.
