Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Alexandria Vargas of Riverside, CA

We recently had the chance to connect with Alexandria Vargas and have shared our conversation below.

Alexandria , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now, I work at a math tutoring center, and a normal day for me depends on whether I’m working there or not. On work days, I wake up, feed my cats, get a workout in, shower, and spend some time on school assignments or art before heading to work. On my days off, if I’m not vending at an event, my routine is pretty similar. I just have more time to be creative and focus on my art.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Alexandria and I’m the face of Black Cat Art, a small art brand focused on moody, gothic-inspired illustrations and handmade pieces. My work includes prints, stickers, patches, pins, sculpted clay ghosts holding heart-shaped balloons, and mystery boxes, often featuring my four cats, who add a personal and playful touch to my otherwise emotional, melancholic style. I sell my work at events and through my online shop, and I’m always exploring new mediums and themed collections when I can. My goal is to make art that resonates with people on a personal and emotional level.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds break when people stop communicating with honesty and stop showing up for each other. When people choose understanding over pride, and vulnerability over fear, connection has a way of finding its way back. Repair is possible when the intention to reconnect is stronger than the ego.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are allowed to create without apologizing for your feelings.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I try to show up as my real self. I don’t believe in acting or pretending for the sake of being liked. I’ve learned that not everyone will connect with me and that’s ok.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace on days when I don’t have to go anywhere. When I can stay home, breathe, work on school assignments or art at my own pace, and just exist without rushing.
