Story & Lesson Highlights with Al Nouri of Los Angeles/OC area

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Al Nouri. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Al, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
There’s an old adage of asking someone, where they learned their manners; subsequently, the answer being “From those without any…”
As important as it is to follow and learn from one’s heroes and inspirations, it is equally vital to learn what things to avoid and not commit, from those one doesn’t respect or wish to associate with. We are enmeshed in both dreams and nightmares; as a result, there’s a lesson in everything.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a born and raised New Yorker, an enigma and a walking contradiction. An old soul at heart, I infuse that sentimentality and nostalgia of days past, in my craft as a screen actor and storyteller. I was trained extensively at The Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and received a B.A Degree in Acting at the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College, before moving to Southern California. I’ve been working as an actor in the Los Angeles market for the past couple years now, and am continuing to build momentum in new and exciting roles, working with passionate and inspiring collaborators to bring daring and compelling independent films to life. On the side, I’m also an expert Cigar Sommelier and manage a couple cigar lounges in the surrounding area of Los Angeles. In my free time, I’m a devoted and passionate Blues Guitarist as well, taking great refuge and meditation in the healing powers of the beautiful art form.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I foolishly believed it was necessary to avoid risk. Through the passage of years and the tribulations of life, I’m eminently reminded that the opposite is true; it is imperative to embrace risk and run towards it, otherwise suffering and pain is guaranteed. Go like hell, and do all the shitty things that scare you….only then will enlightenment and fulfillment follow.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering inherently bestows resilience, and often subconsciously endows hope. While sweet, the feeling of success is cheap because it’s fleeting; conversely, pain and suffering live on. Even through enduring and overcoming suffering, the memory of it never fades, unlike success which is a fickle muse.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
The pursuit of becoming a full-time, working screen actor. It’s the notion of doing something I desperately love for a living, so that it doesn’t feel like work. For all my passions and eccentricities, I’m a fairly boring and quiet person when it comes down to it. The times I feel most alive, intoxicated, elated and exhilarated are when I’m on set, in character and working. The craft of acting, in all its various stages and processes, is for me the most potent high with no equal.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
Pursuing my passions, taking risks and fighting like hell for the people and things I love.
