Story & Lesson Highlights with Ethan Ingram of Silverlake

We recently had the chance to connect with Ethan Ingram and have shared our conversation below.

Ethan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Taking my Corgi to the dog park at dawn. Catching up on emails. Preparing for any shoots that day, or working on set construction for another concept.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a full time commercial/fashion photographer. A Los Angeles native.

I started assisting other photographers when I was still a child, and grew up in the industry.

I had a natural affinity for lighting, and built my career early on around being able to recreate any era of lighting style.

I’m currently working on a new series of fashion photographs for an upcoming gallery that challenges the concept of gender normalities.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I had the privilege and sometimes misfortune of assisting many great photographers as a teenager and young adult.

Many were amazing inspirations who took me under their wing, and taught me so much about the craft. Some were terrible people that left me with a lot of ptsd.

You learn from everyone in different ways. Good and bad.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I have quit many times in the past and gotten a day job, which I’ve always ended up regretting tremendously.

Every artist struggles with self-doubt. It isn’t really until you start accepting yourself that the best art starts to happen.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Mostly. Though I do come off a lot more reserved than I am in person. I do like to be a bit of an enigma.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am. It’s been with me my entire life. I’ve tried to do many other things, and cannot. Photography is too much a part of my existence. I cannot breathe without it.
