An Inspired Chat with Carlo Errin of Los Angeles

Carlo Errin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Carlo , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I keep chasing this music journey. You get discouraged and sometimes you think of stopping and then you get a sign telling you to continue on. I’ll be depressed over the outcome of something then 3 opportunities come my way immediately after.

I have people who discredit smaller acts for not being massive. I had an old friend tell me that since I don’t work in the industry my opinion is invalid. So I continue to work to ensure that people like that are unable to feel as though they were correct in any manner.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carlo Errin, I’m a Los Angeles-based artist and I’ve been making music since 2009. My goal as an artist has always been to form a connection with my listeners. I started gaining an audience on TikTok when I started discussing my opinions on music.

I gained a lot of followers from my music taste alone and then people started to hit me with the “oh wait, you make music?” Ever since then I’ve tried to share my music as well as my thoughts on music cause at the end of the day I’m a fan of music. I love talking to people about what I’m listening to, who inspired this song I wrote, and more.

The main goal of my work is to form a community that allows people to be themselves freely.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
To me, people’s inauthenticity and ideologies are what break bonds. How someone views their work is a big thing for me. I don’t want to work with someone I can’t have a conversation with. All my collaborations have come about due to friendship, not to boost one’s image. I started in a group of around 16 people, I could tell immediately who wasn’t seeing my visions because they had different ideologies and maybe a lack of care.

I want to know why you create what you do, I think that learning the backstory behind someone’s work adds so much. I don’t want to fake a bond, I don’t want to pretend to like you so we can work on something because I love making stuff I’m proud of. I love being proud of the others who put work into the art and the universe they create through their art.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I feel that hardships have allowed for me to appreciate all the good things that have come my way. I used to solely focus on all the negatives in my life and how the bad stuff kept coming and hindering my work process.

I learned that when I’m going through something the best way to get out of that funk is to create. That doesn’t mean I solely ignore my problems and start creating but I’ve noticed that the end of my depressive episodes tend to come when I begin creating again. I’ve been able to reflect on those hardships through music and it’s allowed me to move past them.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The funny thing is, my friends and family tease me about how I don’t have a different persona. That’s just who I am; I don’t need to present a different identity or character to others. I’m myself, and I’ve always wanted to share who I truly am. There are many things people don’t know about me, and honestly, most of it isn’t even interesting. Some things I choose not to share, and that’s because everyone deserves some privacy. I don’t have to act or pretend. I get to be myself. If you have a perception of me, that’s okay; you’re free to know that what I put out there is genuinely me.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I want the community to stay. My goal has always been bigger than me. I have many things I want to achieve on a personal level. I want to do Coachella, I want to do Camp Flog Gnaw, I want to do a solo tour. There’s so much I want to do but bringing a community together is everlasting and that’s what I want. We go to shows and feel connected, we listen to music and feel connected that’s what I want to leave behind.
