Story & Lesson Highlights with Sophia Woode of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Sophia Woode and have shared our conversation below.

Sophia, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time that I felt true joy was when I was In Ghana last year. This is something that I must do every end of the year after workiing non stop and constantly findling ways to elevate my brand.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sophia Woode pronounced SooFire, which is also the name of my brand. I am a DJ, Music publisher, and also a sports fashion designer. SooFire.com I am first generation Ghanaian American and growing up I didnt see any fashion wear that said AFRICA. I always saw JAMAICA, CANADA, MEXICO, USA plastered on T-shirts. I created a sports brand that takes pride in being African. I didn’t want to get specific with countries because its about unity. AFRICA is LOVE and I didnt want to limit people. Currently what I am working on for 2026 is swim suit pieces. I’m prepping also for SooFire’s yearly trip to Ghana in December. I have a couple gigs lined up, and also a curating a pop up shop for SooFire.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The moment I came back to Ghana as an adult after college in 2012 and seeing the everyday hustle and bustle of Ghana. It’s a completely different world, Ghana brought me so much peace. It was very disconnected with the data & technology and for once I was not glued to a computer or phone screen. I was able to slow down, connect with people, share stories, and come up with great creative ideas. I’m very much appreciated and it gave me more motivation to see more of the world and to also come back to America with more ambition then I left with.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was sad or scared as a child music is what helped. Music was my therapy and still is…My father was a DJ and music is how he expresses himself. Music never stopped playing in my house and it has yet to.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version is the real me, my personality is the same, I am a very goofy and jovial person. I love to have a good time but I keep my personal relationships separate from my business. I did appear on a dating show, “Pop the balloon” I am truly looking for a serious relationship, some people thought I was taken and did the show for fun but im not.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Sophia was the ultimate champion of life, she could see your light and she was the type of person that wanted to help you brighten your star. She was a very selfless person and would give her last dollar to someone in need knowing that God will bless her in return. Sophia made people feel beautiful inside and out, through her clothes, her music, and her compassion for people. Sophia fought for inclusion and opened doors that future generations are now able to go through. She also inspired more women to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
