Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Ryan Heimbach

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ryan Heimbach. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Ryan, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
Wake up with my kids and see what they want to have for breakfast, if it’s a school day get them ready to go on the bus and if it’s a weekend then I see what kind of adventure we can get into. On a weekday after I have got the kids on the bus I go to work with a local artist by the name Andrew Myers that I have been working with for over 15 years.

After work I meet the kids at their bus stop and see what kind of activity they want to do. Once I have worn out my kids doing something fun I get them dinner with mommy and then bedtime routine; shower, brush teeth, read a book, and tuck them into bed.

Once they are all tucked into bed I have my time to go to my little studio setup in my house to work for hopefully 2 hours on a current project. One of my current series is about how life or people can be messy, but there is beauty in that mess. I’m still working on the title of the series, but it might end up being called “beautiful mess”.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ryan Heimbach and I am an artists. Working with traditional art mediums such as sculpture, drawing and painting. Within those mediums I try to give my own take on them by experimenting with new ways to express my ideas. Sometimes my experimenting turns in to mixed media art, which is one of my favorite ways to create art. I love taking classic themes, materials, or styles and giving it a modern twist.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed I had to be self conscious of the way my face looks. I was born with a cleft lip, palate, and nose. I had over 20 surgeries from the age of 3 months to 18 years old. Nowadays I have to remind myself that I have it, in a good way. I have moved on from the constant worry about how my face is structured and not needing to feel so self conscious about it. It has been freeing to say the least.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t worry about how you look worry about how you feel. Also don’t let others negatively influence your thoughts or feelings especially when it is something you deeply believe in.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Stoicism, through the ancient teachings of Marcus Aurelius and also the author Ryan Holiday whom has a more modern take on Stoicism.

To me stoicism helps me with the day to day issues and even the big life situations that happen. I try to let myself have difficult feelings and feel all the emotions that may arise, although not let them control me or over influence me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I am outside in the woods completely solo on a hike or bike ride. Sometimes I can feel at peace when I am completely involved in a new piece of art or project. I also really want to start backpacking up in the Sierra Nevada, but first there is much work to be done.
