We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ell Burgos. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Ell, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
Absolutely, there’s no way I’d let something slide if it’s diminishing, insulting, or derogatory, even if it costs me a job. if anything the job I was in wasn’t the right place if these things would happen.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I am Ell Burgos. I am a bassist, composer, and sound designer from Lima, Peru, based in Los Angeles. I grew up in a non-musical family, and at the age of 21, I moved to Los Angeles to study music. I bought my first bass guitar and taught myself how to play. I would play day and night until I felt sick to my stomach. At some point with a lot of discipline I started landing tours. I have performed and toured with artists such as WRENN, Hey Violet, Lily Meola, aleXa, Roe Kapara, Jensen McRae, and many more
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was really shy growing up as a child. I would focus on sports a lot and hang out only with the boys. I was a gay child in a catholic church, so I had no idea why I was even attracted to my girlfriends. I didn’t understand my feelings and grew up a bit repressed, and would not speak much. I thought my voice didn’t have power, or it didn’t matter. It took me a long time, even after high school, to let go of that. It wasn’t until I decided to fully embrace who I am and what I wanted to do with my life that I started speaking up more. Everyone’s opinions and voices are beyond important,
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear is something we deal with constantly, and it’s a practice not to fear. This society doesn’t teach you anything else but that. Learning how to balance being optimistic and rational about your life decisions can be tricky, but it’s essential to keep yourself happy and trusting the process. Fear will always be there, and it’s an ongoing process to learn how to use it to your advantage.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
It means a lot to me when my friends know I am a reliable person. Nowadays, everyone is so busy and caught up in life that they often neglect their relationships. I understand that as well, but something I appreciate and I know my friends do too is reliability and loyalty.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
People will disagree with me on this one, but I believe that no musician is better than another, and no human being is inherently better than others. A person might be more experienced, a faster learner, and more disciplined. All of these don’t mean you can’t develop the basics and techniques to become a good musician. I want people to remember me as someone who, yes, started her career “late” but that it didn’t matter. It’s really never too late, no matter how often people say it.
