Story & Lesson Highlights with melissa rivera of Fairfax District

We’re looking forward to introducing you to melissa rivera. Check out our conversation below.

Hi melissa, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think everyone struggles with self-image, self-worth, and self-love. Simply because these are concepts that take time to learn, and sometimes we don’t get the chance to teach our young about them soon enough.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Puerto Rican-born writer, actress, and creator passionate about stories that celebrate Latin culture, female empowerment, and self-discovery. I’m the creator of the original digital series Carmen Miranda, which blends comedy, music, and heart to explore identity and reinvention. My work bridges entertainment and purpose. I want to inspire people to embrace who they truly are and chase their biggest dreams, no matter where they come from.

I’m currently developing Season 2 of Carmen Miranda through a Seed&Spark crowdfunding campaign.

The campaign launches on October 15th, 2025.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was in the 9th grade, when I organized my classmates for a school talent show, and we won. I remember the excitement of bringing everyone together, coming up with ideas, rehearsing, and seeing our hard work pay off on stage. It was the first time I realized that I could inspire and lead people toward a shared vision. That experience planted the seed for everything I do now, creating, performing, and producing projects that unite people through art and storytelling.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain and started using it as power when I created my short film Sexless, which premiered at LA Shorts. That project came from a place of vulnerability after a long process of self-discovery. Turning that pain into art was liberating. It taught me that storytelling can transform wounds into strength, and that honesty is far more powerful than perfection.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The cultural value I protect at all costs is staying close to my roots. My Puerto Rican heritage grounds me, it’s where my creativity, strength, and spirit come from. No matter where I go, I carry that with pride.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely, it’s my way of life. I believe that true artistry and purpose come from giving your all, regardless of who’s watching. Praise is wonderful, but it’s not what fuels me. What drives me is the love for the craft, the message behind the work, and the satisfaction of knowing I’ve done my best. Even when no one is clapping, I keep going, because excellence and authenticity are their own rewards.
