FLAVIO BISCIOTTI shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
FLAVIO, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
The decision to hire me leverages your most valuable asset – three decades of irreplaceable experience in design, construction, and artistic values. This combination of technical expertise, industry relationships, and financial stability creates an ideal foundation for successful self-employment in a market that increasingly values integrated design-build services and specialised expertise.
My observation about younger professionals lacking the craftsmanship of older, experienced artists like myself reflects a well-documented reality in the construction and design industries. The profound gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern production methods has created a generation of workers who are fundamentally different from the master artisans of previous eras.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Bisciotti Design is a well-established company with three decades of experience, founded in 1995 by me. The firm is an all-in-one design and build company and consultancy based in Los Angeles that manages the entire design and manufacturing process across a diverse range of projects, including architectural spaces, interior details, environments, furniture, and art installations. Bisciotti Design serves both commercial and residential clients with a speciality in interiors and remodels. Their clientele includes restaurants, retail storefronts, and private residences, and the company has both regional and international reach.
Flavio Bisciotti, the company’s president and a master craftsman, brings a rich background in architecture and artistic practice. With over 30 years of experience in furniture design and interior architectural detail, characterised by a unique and eclectic style that blends post-modern with Renaissance influences. His work extends beyond design and construction to encompass visual art, with influences drawn from Latin American artists and a creative process that integrates mixed media, drawing, painting, collage, and model-making.
Bisciotti Design has been involved in multiple projects, including custom modernist multi-family lofts in Venice and Hollywood, where custom details from door handles to cabinetry and lighting were designed. The company emphasises craftsmanship, creativity, and comprehensive project management from inception through installation.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
After graduating in Architecture in Argentina, A move to Los Angeles marked the beginning of my professional journey. My first work experience was with a small company in Venice dedicated to building large-scale architectural models. This role provided my initial exposure to machinery and a variety of materials, sparking a deep interest and foundational skills.
This early experience propelled me to eventually found my own studio, where I expanded my creative scope. I began designing and producing my own product line, including small cabinetry, mirrors, and various decorative items. This transition from architecture to hands-on design and production highlights a seamless blend of technical knowledge and artistic expression, embodying my 30 years of expertise and craftsmanship in design and construction.
Years later, I had the opportunity to join a group of architects and designers to collaborate on designing and building some interesting residential units in Venice and West Hollywood. This experience allowed me to further develop my hands-on skills in architectural design and construction within vibrant, creative communities.
Working on these projects helped reinforce my expertise in integrating design and build processes, contributing to the unique character of these areas while showcasing my craftsmanship and artistic values.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Indeed, challenges and storms are inevitable in any long career, especially in design and construction. In my case, two particularly traumatic situations stand out. One major difficulty was the 2008 economic crisis, which severely impacted the industry and my work at a critical moment—right in the middle of a large development project. This global financial downturn caused widespread disruptions, project delays, and financial strain, creating a tough environment for continuing or completing developments.
Years later, in 2016, I faced another devastating blow when my Venice studio burned to the ground. Despite the terrible impact of this loss, I emphasise that the most important thing is oneself, the inner strength and resilience to reinvent oneself. Such profound setbacks highlight the importance of adaptability and perseverance.
Such experiences, although painful, often bring valuable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and strategic planning, shaping the approach to managing projects and navigating future uncertainties.
I believe that there is always room to reinvent oneself, and ultimately, it is essential to stay true to who you are and what you believe in. For me, this core is your passion for design and artistic values. By holding on to these principles and dreams, I not only survive hardships but also continue to grow and create meaningful work in my field.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Receiving compliments from people I know is very comforting because, generally, people don’t always have the time to notice the details of your work. It is deeply satisfying to know that people who understand you personally support your efforts, appreciate your intentions, and recognise the meaning and purpose behind what you do.
Positive feedback from familiar individuals reinforces confidence and motivation, as it reflects a shared understanding of the value and effort behind my creative and professional endeavours.
In architecture and design, client and peer appreciation play a crucial role in fostering confidence and focus, enhancing performance, and ultimately improving overall satisfaction with one’s work. Such recognition validates the quality and intentions behind my designs and can lead to stronger collaborations and sustained professional relationships, which are crucial for long-term success.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
When you discover your passion and dedicate your life to doing what you were truly meant to do, it brings a profound sense of comfort and fulfilment. Pursuing your true calling aligns your daily efforts with your core values and dreams, creating a life rich in purpose and satisfaction. This alignment energises and motivates me, making even the most challenging tasks feel meaningful.
Such fulfilment is precious and rare, and many believe that the greatest regret in life is not pursuing one’s passion. Living authentically and following what matters most can transform work from a burden into a source of joy and creativity.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to realise their passions without regret and to build a life that reflects who they genuinely are.
