Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Nancy Goodman Lawrence of Los Angeles

Nancy Goodman Lawrence shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Nancy Goodman, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day begins before 7. The first thing I do is take my dog outside and then give him breakfast. I no longer get a physical newspaper, so I eat breakfast in front of my computer. I read the paper online, check social media and emails and sometimes check in with my daughter re text. I then shower and go for a walk. I like to get any chores behind me before I can do any work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a mixed media artist with a degree in art from UCLA. I have spent decades developing my unique style, which combines paint and paper in odd ways. I constantly use what I am currently doing as a springboard to move forward so that my art remains fresh.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
As a child, I struggled with self-esteem, and when my grandmother said to me, “You are your own person,” I took that as one of the biggest compliments I had ever received – obviously, since I still remember it to this day.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
Based on recent experience and the ages of my friends and me, I am making a conscious effort to follow my instinct about checking in with people on a regular basis – with no standing on ceremony and an acknowledgment that people have a lot going on in their lives and have good intentions about staying in touch but too often let time go by.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
There will always be trends in fashion, art and popular culture. The important thing is to constantly keep in mind who you are personally, what your art is about and not fall into a trap of trying to fit in to what is going on around you. Whatever the trend, it is just that – something that will pass quickly and leave you in the dust if you try to chase it.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want to be remembered as a caring person ahead of an artist. I hope that I have made a lasting impression on my kids and grandkids, and for them to remember that and pass it forward would mean the world to me. I would also like to be acknowledged for my dedication to making art.
