Story & Lesson Highlights with Sarah Hyland of Glassell park

We recently had the chance to connect with Sarah Hyland and have shared our conversation below.

Sarah , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Painting or any creative project, but especially painting and creating within characters.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Sarah Rose Hyland and I’m a visual arrtist and a comedian. I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, attended The School of the Art Institure of Chicago and Scond City In Chicago, then moved to Los Angeles, Ca and completed the program at Second City. From there, I started doing stand up comedy, performing original characters and landed my first job in Los Angeles which was a cast member on Season 5 on “Punk”d” on MTV.
Presently, I am preparing for a gallery show in April curated by Brittany Fanning in West Hollywood, titled “Love To Hate.” I am performing stand up around the country as well as in Los Angeles and beginning to tour soon! I think my brand
is different in that, I still use multiple mediums but all fall under the same brand, which is just be yourself and do the f out of it. I promote being out of the box no matter what, just keep creating. I’m married to Jen Rosenstein, a VERY talented photographer and we have 1 pup, Pegasus and 1 cat, Esther the cat. They are used as constant inspiration as well as creative collaborators.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My high school art teacher, Ms. Wolf, Johnathan Pitts, my improv teacher from Second City Chicago, and Doug Stanhope, the first real comedian I ever met.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Music. Listening to music and memorizing the lyrics would always help, but mostly just listening to any kind of music. And of course, going into my parents closet, using their clothes and my moms make up to create characters to make them
Laugh when they got home from work.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The more followers you have, the more success you’re going to have.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
