Gina, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
Chasing down our Culture, our Identity. As Latinos/Native people we have a very Diverse Culture and it’s Beautiful. Due to gentrification on the Westside of Los Angeles, especially here in Santa Monica we have lost so many Families, Businesses and cultural connections.
If I stopped chasing our Culture, I would lose My identity, My connection to My Ancestors, My Family, My Neighbors and My Dancers.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My Name is Gina DeBaca. I Began a Ballet Folklorico Dance class in My yard 20 years ago. Why is this so Revolutionary?
Because Our Community went through a rapid gentrification. We lost so many of our Families, Businesses and now our culture was being erased. There were No longer any Folklorico dance classes anywhere on the Westside. So I started
‘Santa Monica Ballet Folklorico’
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Dance has always been empowering. I am in control of My Body’s movements. I can create stories with the Dance.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was a few times I was ready to just throw in the towel. Divine intervention or My stubbornness or both kept Me moving forward. Really My Love of Dance Kept Me moving forward. The monetary struggle is challenging but you get creative and smart.
Ask for advice. I went to My own Dance teachers and mentors for suggestions, We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.
We have grown from a Dance class into a Dance Company.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public Me is the Real Me. We need to be genuine. To be honest with ourselves and others.
I Love Dance and wanted a world of Dance, so I created it. Your Morals and values will see you through troubled times. Your Family, Friends, Staff and clients appreciate the Real you.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
My Love of Dance, the Santa Monica Community and The Latino/Native Culture kept the Original Culture Alive in Santa Monica.
