Good morning Amina, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Now, I’m definitely walking a path. In the past, I’ve wandered when I didn’t know how to achieve my goals and felt unmotivated because of that. As I grew older, I learned to truly listen to myself, physically and emotionally–I finally trusted myself. This led to me performing better, booking more jobs, learning new skills, and, overall, improving my mental health. There’s always more to learn, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure!
Hello to all of the readers! My name is Amina Sarla Bahy and I love art and adventure! Ever since I was a child, I loved creating. This passion became a reality a couple years ago when I began taking my dreams seriously by investing my time, money and energy into myself. Gratefully, I’m now a working actor and model who couldn’t be happier. I also love to DJ and I’m currently working on an additional journey in music!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Judgment breaks bonds. Open communication and empathy restores them.
I believe humans all share an intangible link that is explained through the power of art. Art is what separates us from the foundational animal inside us to our highest self. Forgetting that is a waste of an opportunity to understand different people. I believe this mindset is what influences my love for travel, culture, and school. Everything is interesting to me, especially human behavior. I love learning about how someone lives, where they come from, their life experiences etc.
In this age of ‘doomscrolling’, fighting ignorance and judgment can be hard (I’ve definitely fallen victim to this). Fighting for communication, empathy, and understanding will not only improve your connection to others, but yourself too.
There is always something to learn if you’re a charitable listener!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are not supposed to know everything. Give yourself more credit for experiencing pain and, still, coming out the other side a decent person.
Everyone struggles with life’s inconsistencies and spontaneity. They beat themselves up for making mistakes and ‘not knowing better’. I find the phrase: ‘not knowing better’ so funny because, as old as you are, you’re still experiencing life for the first time at that age. This means you’re destined to mess up over and over again.
Cut yourself the slack you would for a loved one. You should already be loving yourself just as much.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
If by ‘public version’ you mean ‘internet version’, my answer is: no. I only keep my social media profiles for sharing projects and networking. Seperating my true self from the internet has improved my mental health by miles. Growing up with the internet made this very hard for me, especially during my teen years, but I’m happy with the relationship I have with social media now.
If by ‘public version’ you mean the ‘in-real-life version’ of me, my answer is: yes. I pride myself on being transparent with friends and family because they’re the ones I love most. They deserve the rawest version of me.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I’m ALWAYS tap dancing to work. I love my job so much. If I could work all day 24/7, I would. I love the process of applying to jobs. I love recording self-tapes. I love getting rejected from jobs because I always learn something new. I love driving to set at the crack of dawn knowing I’m about to be a part of a cool production with cool artists. I love overnight shoots when everyone’s exhausted and the sleep deprivation causes a giggle fest. I love watching myself turn into a character. I love everything about it. I absolutely love it. I’m extremely grateful that my dream has been working out well for me and I’m excited to see where my life takes me!
