Casey, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
That’s an interesting question. At different periods in my life, I’ve chased various goals. Now, my most pressing goal is to maintain a position that allows me to continue writing and creating art. Whatever comes from that is special, but not what I’m striving for. I don’t know what would happen if I stopped. I’ve been creating things for so long, I don’t know any other way.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Casey Mensing, and I’m an award-winning screenwriter, poet, and visual artist. My nomadic existence currently finds me living in Downtown Los Angeles. In my free time, I enjoy taking photos and bringing home stray books. Currently, I’m working on several new writing and visual art projects, including a crime novel, a one-act play, a new collection of poetry, and many paintings and collages.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
For a long time, there was a deeply insecure part of myself that sought validation for the things I created. It served a purpose in the earlier years because it forced me to put myself out there and share my work. I don’t have that same sense of insecurity or need for people’s opinions on what I’ve done, so it might be time to let go of seeking that type of validation.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I’ve definitely had periods where the fear of taking risks has controlled me. This attitude has been a significant obstacle in my life, and because of it, I’ve at times chosen the easier path or to play it safe, when the most beneficial move would have been to take a chance.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
There’s a Japanese proverb that I picked up from the director Samuel Fuller. The first face; you show the world. The second face; you show to your close friends and family. The third face; you never show anyone. It is the truest reflection of who you are.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What false labels are you still carrying?
I can only control and be concerned with the labels I put on myself. Whatever labels others wish for me to carry, I can’t be bothered with.
