Good morning Donatella, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day begin with doing my best to physically spring out of bed, this little jolt of enthusiasm is meant to snap me out of my sleepy and sometimes deep dreams. I like to thank creator for allowing me to rest, for my comfy bed and home, then I proceed to tell myself how much of a great day I’m going to have. I tell myself that my day will be filled with joy, love and productivity. I go down the slide, turn on meditation music and drink 8oz of celery juice followed by tea. I sit peacefully on my pink velvet chaise lounge chair and just breathe and be for 15 minutes or so. Then I’m ready to start my day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Donatella Azygous, the founder of Azygous Art Haüs located in downtown Los Angeles. Azygous Art Haüs is a special place for myself, my colleagues and clients because it’s a space that has the power to transport you mentally, to inspire and fill you with childlike wonder. It’s a place to play, to explore and immerse yourself in art. The curation of art in the Azygous Art Haüs and the detailed nature within the space makes the good energy almost palpable, Curious? We’d love to show you!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My number one supporter has always been my mother. She’s had a huge influence in my artistic journey, as a child I remember watching her sew my Halloween costumes, decorate our home for the holidays and tinker with crafts. At the age of 10 I suddenly became interested in art; I recall my Christmas gifts shifting from Barbie’s and Polly Pockets to markers, paintbrushes and any tool I could use to create. Until this day she tells me that I’m her favorite artist, it never fails to fill my heart with joy.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
In my life I’ve experienced death, trouble, illness and failure… on multiple occasions… but that’s just life. It’s what we all go through, pain is inevitable. My technique for healing from traumatic events has always been this: Find the lesson. For every instance we experience, there is something to be learned. Having this mentality has allowed me to find the silver linings in all of my troubles. I do my best to push through the pain and ask myself “Why did I have to go through this? What is the lesson?” And while the answers may take a while to reveal themselves, they always do. We must give pain a purpose and learn from our circumstances.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I’m blessed to have some of the most amazing, intelligent and inspiring clients/friends. That being said it’s actually tough to single any out… but if I must… I really look up to these three women: Dakota Weiss, Hannah Elliot and Jenny Silbert. These ladies are resilient, respected and extremely intelligent. Not only are they all of this, but they’re the coolest and kindest souls. I could only ever hope to be as transcendent as them.
I can’t forget about my boys- Leonel Hunt is a radically amazing human, not only is he brilliant but he and his brother have a foundation where they perform restorative surgeries on children in Africa. Mind blowing! That’s only the tip of the iceberg too- I could go on and on about these beautiful souls that I get to experience and work with.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Throughout my life experience I’ve come to understand that making memories with those we love is the most important thing. It’s not the materials we possess or the number in our bank accounts that truly fill us with joy. It’s the little moments with friends and family that matter, the uncontrollable laughter… the dancing… the board games… the trips and shared meals. This is what we actually get to keep. This is how we will be remembered. Everything is so much better shared.
