Sean, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Absolutely! I’m very driven and I’m passionate about my craft. I’d like to think I play the role very well. So yes, I believe hiring myself is beneficial to the vision and dream.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
What’s up readers! I’m Sean Kellz, singer songwriter and saxophonist based in Los Angeles. Raised in Virginia, I’ve been a part of numerous bands, sang in the church choir as well as in a quartet called The Sons of Zion of Newport News, VA. Being out here in Los Angeles has really driven the opportunities to play from busking or street performing to weddings, birthday dinners, and several other private events. As a full time musician, it’s my goal to experience the full potential of a recording artist and have fun writing and making the music.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My mother used to always say, “you can’t do anything sitting down,” especially when it came to chores. As a teenager, I didn’t fully grasp her meaning, but as an adult, I’ve learned that approaching tasks with laziness won’t get them done correctly or efficiently. Beyond her lessons, real-life experiences have reinforced for me that work ethic, routine, and discipline are essential. During a period of homelessness and feeling stuck in life, I realized I had to approach work differently if I wanted to see different results.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
This: WAY TO GO, MY BOY!! You really wanted this life and you did the work! Hitting open mics and talent shows, writing original music and recording in studio sessions, and playing your saxophone. All that work doesn’t go unnoticed, now sit back and be proud. I got us from here.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe that everything in life—whether it’s love, career opportunities, relationships, or personal values—is obtainable. If someone truly wants something, they can put in the work to achieve it. While some may not take the necessary steps and never see their goals realized, I believe that if it’s genuinely in your heart, it’s possible to bring it to life. I mean, look at my music career. I chose this and it brings me so much joy doing what I love.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a concert hall on the water. Imagine being with friends and family on the beachfront and about 100 feet off shore is a stage for live music, plays, weddings, and more night life. It would either be this, or I would just buy a cruise ship and throw a 4-5 day festival with all the big names headlines.
