Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Savvas Christou

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Savvas Christou. Check out our conversation below.

Savvas, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, surfing has been bringing me a lot of joy. It’s something that challenges me physically while also giving me a sense of calm and perspective. Being out on the water helps me clear my mind, disconnect from stress, and come back feeling refreshed. It keeps me active and healthy, but it also teaches me patience and focus, since every wave is different. I find that it really helps me maintain balance outside of work and often inspires me creatively as well.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Savvas Christou and I am a filmmaker as well as the founder of Cult Experiences Productions. Through the production company I create films, commercials and narrative driven advertisements that are designed to feel cinematic and emotionally engaging. Even when the format is short, I see it as a chance to tell a story with atmosphere, depth and character. This approach is what makes our productions stand out and allows us to connect with audiences in a meaningful way.

Education is also very important to me, which is why I established Cult Experiences Academy. There I teach film directing and guide students through practical workshops and projects that give them hands-on experience with storytelling. The Academy has become a place where young filmmakers can experiment, make mistakes, learn and ultimately discover their own voice as artists.

Finally, there is the Cult Experiences Festival, which includes the Cyprus Fashion Film Festival, the Cyprus Dance Film Festival and the Cyprus Music Video Festival. The festival brings together artists from different disciplines and countries, creating a wider community in the arts where collaboration and inspiration can thrive. It is a celebration of how cinema can connect with fashion, music and dance, and it continues to grow as a space where artists can share their vision and meet others who are equally passionate.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was simply a curious kid who loved to imagine stories. I remember spending hours creating little worlds in my head, acting them out with toys, or even turning everyday moments into scenes of a film that only I could see. I was unafraid of being different and unbothered by whether my ideas made sense to anyone else. In many ways, I think I am still that same person, but now I channel that raw curiosity and playfulness into filmmaking and storytelling.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was a time I almost gave up while trying to raise money for my first feature film. I believed in the story deeply, but every door seemed to close and each rejection made me question if it was even possible. The financial pressure and the uncertainty felt overwhelming, and I wondered if I should just walk away. What kept me going was the constant support I had from my friends and family, who reminded me that I was not alone in the struggle. I am also a very stubborn person when it comes to doing what motivates me, and that side of me refused to let go of the dream. In the end, the film was completed, and the journey showed me how much resilience, belief, and community matter when chasing something you truly care about.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is authenticity and passion. I care deeply about doing things with honesty and giving my full energy to what I love. They know I value relationships where people can be real with each other and where support is genuine. They would also say that creating meaningful stories through my work matters to me, not just for success, but because it feels like a way of contributing something lasting. At the end of the day, I think they see that what drives me most is connection, creativity, and staying true to myself.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I was someone who dedicated his life to telling stories that mattered. That I was not afraid to take risks, to experiment, and to bring people together through art and creativity. I want to be remembered as someone who created opportunities for others, who believed in collaboration, and who never stopped chasing ideas even when they seemed impossible. More than anything, I hope the story people tell is that I left behind a sense of community and inspiration, and that my work encouraged others to dream a little bigger and to trust in their own voice.
