Shawn, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I’ve been actively trying to support more friends in their artistic endeavors. There are so many amazing comedians, artists, and performers out there putting up some great stuff. From character and clown performances, to solo shows, to most recently, talented friends making the episodic film project “Mt. Mystic”. There are a lot of incredible people I can learn from and laugh with.
I feel proud seeing friends succeeding at what they love.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Shawn Frambach. I am an actor, comedian, and writer in Los Angeles (very unique).
I teach improv comedy at Westside Comedy Theater. I perform improv, sketch, and character comedy all around LA. I perform the fun monthly show, “Me & Who?” at Pack Theater, a narrative two-prov show where my partner is a different guest every show. I’m also a living organ (kidney) donor and love sharing my personal experience with folks curious about donating.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
It’s the same for me as I’m sure it is for many comedy performers – the first few big laughs you get on stage. I think that feeling is one of the most formidable early experiences of somebody pursuing comedy. There is something really illuminating about the realization that you can learn to make people laugh. It’s validating, intoxicating, and fascinating. It’s something I’ve been glued to since I first discovered it.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Perfectionism. That one thing has kept me from even starting many projects. I’ve spent so much time waiting to be a part of what others were creating. So much time lost. Something I am currently and will probably always be working on is creating things despite those perfectionist feelings. Allowing myself to make something that doesn’t meet my standards in an effort to create and get better. A result is better than no result. This ebbs and flows like all things, but in practicing this, I have found more success and learning about myself, my tastes, and how I can improve.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Exploring and pushing myself artistically. I am forever inspired by folks around me – actors, comedians, performers – that push themselves, try things, and experiment in the face of potential failure. I love reaching my limits and places where I’m a little uncomfortable and figuring out why. This alleviates some of the “what if I bomb/what if this fails?” aspect of thinking. It allows you to focus more on the process and exploration.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace at two different times lately – the reflective high moments right after a great show and also laughing really hard with friends. Those are the moments I reflect on how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many great people who bring joy and laughter into my life. Nothing makes me feel better than being surrounded by folks who really prioritize a sense of play in their lives.
