Eddie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of a regular day for me include a big cup of coffee, feed my dog Donut, answer emails/texts, look at my schedule for the day, and get ready for the gym.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Eddie Mickenberg and I’m an interior designer in Los Angeles, CA. My interior design firm specializes in luxury interior design, remodel, and decor. Planning from new construction all the way to the final details. My approach is to create an environment that brings out my client’s personality and style in a sophisticated way, yet sometimes playful.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a very lost young boy growing up, and the world made me feel left out, no category that made sense for little Eddie. Come to find out I would want nothing more to feel I am my own person and being myself is the best option. Without those times of confusion and heartbreak that I didn’t fit in, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today. I was always creative, and that’s what made my soul feel alive. Still does.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Giving up was never an option for me. I did and do everything I can to never give up. Quitting has never crossed my mind because I can be relentless in that way, but I also believe in myself and that I can push through. When I came out here starting with absolutely nothing and no one to fall back on living wise, you do what you need to do to get by. Survival skills kick in, and giving up just isn’t a choice. I am glad I have gone through difficult times that built my mental strength to overcome difficult positions.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
It’s a version of me. But, maybe 4% of me. The public version of me is based around my brand, my business, my designs, occasionally let you in my personal life. But, the expectation and assumptions people have of me personally is wild. I use my social platforms, anything I’m published in, public forums as a tool for my business. Very few people know me and I am very private. But, realize how powerful my story can be for others to hear. So starting to slowly open up a little more.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What light inside you have you been dimming?
These questions are deep. Honestly, I struggle a lot accepting that I have some success, because I genuinely don’t feel that way. I dim my own light because I block out what I have done and don’t think about it. But, it’s overwhelming when I do. I’m currently unpacking that with my therapist at the moment. lol! Makes me laugh because this is a very similar topic in my session last week. I truly believe in myself and know I am capable, challenge myself with big risks because I know I’ll figure it out. But, I don’t really think acknowledging success was ever the goal. It just is what it is and I keep it moving, shooting for higher bars for myself.
