JESSICA, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Building routines outside of work brings me joy. Lately, I’ve been into weightlifting and gardening with my partner. It’s so important to nurture your body and mind; both activities allow me to do that in different but similar ways. My camera bag never seems to get lighter, and the strength training has been helping me when I’m on location. Gardening is peaceful for the soul and nourishing for the body. We grow a variety of peppers, onions, tomatoes, and more.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Southern California-based commercial and editorial photographer, specializing in Branding & Lifestyle, with 17 years of experience, working with businesses and talents from all levels, established or upcoming. I build strong, sincere relationships with my clients, working closely to create modern images that portray their brands authentically—leading to years of recurring partnership together. My style is true to color and vibrant, inspired by individuality and light.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents have been my biggest inspiration when it comes to work! As an immigrant, my father embraced various trades, but when faced with an incurable illness, he turned his challenges into triumph by starting his own business. His relentless determination and encouragement to pursue my passions have shaped me profoundly. He was always there for me whenever I needed business advice. My mother has taught me about hard work ethic and customer service as that’s the field she’s been in my whole life. I use to go to love going to her work for the take your child to work days school did.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
To love myself more and not care as much about what others think of me. I have ride or die friends who have been in my life for over 15 years. I could have spent less time worrying about people who were never really concerned about me.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I don’t know if it’s a lie but I believe that normalizing photoshop and face tuning to take away beauty imperfections and aging is harmful.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I regret not spending more time with my family. I’ve dealt with that regret since I lost my father during COVID-19. I’ve been hustling hard for my career, and maintaining it keeps me in California, away from my family. Many people don’t really know realize how much sacrifice goes into a business freelance photography.
