Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Cimabue.
Hi Christine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I spent over a decade in construction and kept seeing the same problem, nobody was truly prioritizing homeowners’ health. Nobody from the contractor to the subcontractors were connecting how their work could eventually impact the family living in the home. After working for material suppliers and then under luxury builders, I decided to become a contractor myself to change exactly that and laser focus on building healthy homes.
My background is actually in interior design, but I’m way too type A for that creative world! My brain works best off decisions that are systematic and are either right or wrong, which led me straight into construction.
The real turning point was buying my first home in 2011, only to discover it had mold issues. Going through that nightmare while simultaneously watching so-called “luxury” builders cut corners really opened my eyes. I thought, “This has to change, and homeowners need to know what’s really possible.”
Now I run a successful holistic construction consulting firm helping families across the US build truly healthy homes. I’m on a mission to make safe, healthy homes the standard by educating homeowners and their build team.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Not even close! When I first focused on only building and renovating healthy homes, I thought it was all about picking the right materials or more non-toxic finishes. I quickly learned that even the best of the best materials fail when subcontractors aren’t familiar with them or are installed incorrectly.
Being in a male-dominated industry while challenging how things have “always been done” created plenty of resistance. I often find myself becoming the interpreter between homeowners who want healthy homes and builders who haven’t been trained to think of the work they perform having an impact (positive or negative) on the health of the family living in the home.
The biggest struggle has been shifting from a reactive to a proactive mindset. Rather than fixing problems after they happen, I’m all about preventing them from occurring in the first place. That requires more planning and sometimes more upfront investment, but it absolutely pays off in the long run. It’s true, a pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure, especially when it comes to homebuilding to avoid mold and defects.
We’ve been impressed with Holistic Homes By Christine Cimabue, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My consulting firm guides homeowners through the strategies and details that go into building a healthy home. We don’t just focus on pretty finishes, we integrate building performance with health strategies to create homes that actually support a thriving family.
We help with everything from pre-design planning and material selection to construction document review and third-party inspections with a collaborative team approach. For clients who’ve had mold exposure in previous homes, we are sure to infuse their expectations throughout the project and have the right safeguards in place.
What sets us apart? Our obsession with preventing water damage and building defects. While the norm is to focus on aesthetics, we recognize that without proper moisture control, even the most carefully selected non-toxic materials will fail when they get wet.
The bottom line is this: healthy home building isn’t just about avoiding chemicals, it’s about creating a robust heirloom quality home that can last decades without catastrophic (and costly) defects. The decisions you make during the design and build of your home will affect your family’s health far more than most people realize. Our goal is that the impact is a positive one.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We work best with homeowners who bring us in early, ideally before finalizing architectural plans. Much of the magic of a healthy home happens in the planning stages. We work virtually on projects all over the US and have a great network of contacts for a successful project. I hear so often from homeowners, “I don’t know what I don’t know, but I know I want a healthy home” and we fill that gap, communicating expectations and strategies to the entire team. Following us on social media or subscribing to our newsletter gives you valuable insights even if you’re not building right now.
The simplest way to support our mission? Demand better from the construction industry. Ask tough questions about moisture management, ventilation, and material quality when interviewing builders. The more homeowners who speak up, the faster things will change.
