Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Taylor
Aaron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was released from prison after serving 26 years of a 50 to Life. Since October 2020, I’ve been pursuing a career as a Sports Broadcaster and Content Creator.
I’ve worked with the Venice Basketball League, American Basketball Association, Womens Universal Basketball Assc, Womens Professional Basketball Assc.; ive hosted a Ted Talk in 2022, work3d with 42nd Annual Sports Emmy Awards in 2021, all the way to the NBA and the Golden State Warriors.
In 2022, I signed with the World Famous Coin Academy and began filming Hard In The Paint Podcast and becoming a Content Creator and a Podcast host. In 2023, the World Famous Coin Academy created the newest online sensation, Friday Night Fades, where i call all the punch for punch action since it’s inception in August 2023.
In 2024, I signed with KQBH 101.5 Los Angeles and began Hard In The Paint Radio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is ever smooth lol. No, it’s been twists and turns, subplots and drama, suspense, action and long pauses lol. You just have to stay focused and dedicated to what you’re doing and staying goal orientated. Don’t get caught up in each success, but do celebrate each win. Each win should be a step toward a larger goal.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I’m teaching sports broadcasting to young people 10 – 15 in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles. It’s great work that we’re starting, getting kids involved in other aspects of sports media. Every kid may want to be an athlete, but every kid isn’t physically gifted to play sports- at any level- but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be connected. This is where I come in, teaching the craft and art of play by play commentary; analysis; statistics, sideline reporting, sports journalism and learning self editing techniques.
I learned all this by either being auto didactics or, later, joining the Journalism Guild at San Quentin State Prison and learning the AP Writing Style, crafting a voice as a Sports Writer for San Quentin News and later, becoming Sports Editor of SQN while also running my own personal sports page called The Show.
I’m teaching all I learned while I was inside and, hopefully, prevent kids from having to go to prison to learn these tools.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Every day is a risk. Yes, I’ve taken risks since coming home. It’s a little scary after 26yrs inside to come home to an entirely new society. So, every day, I’m taking risks: doing business, meeting new people, driving, taking public transportation, going out… everything is a risk. I just relearned and I’m still retraining my mind and body on how to respond to the newness.
With that said, if your aren’t taking risks, you won’t ever feel the excitement of winning. Yes, you can and will lose taking risks, but, the reward is so much better when grind on the Dailey and don’t look up, you’re just working. And then, you look up and you look at what youve built. All that on risk.
