Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Garcia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After having my baby I quickly realized my post baby wardrobe would be different. The shop started to refresh my own dress collection and have fun in the process. Although I’ve always had entrepreneurial ideas, working from home and filling my new role as a mom left little to no desire in my mind to start a business. Little did I know what this idea would blossom into and how much I would enjoy this venture. I hoped others would appreciate my existing collection and so I took the chance and listed them for sale via Instagram. To my surprise I was able to send my beloved frocks to new homes. And I made a little money to refresh my wardrobe. Now what? Well by then I had caught the bug. How fun it was to hunt and discover pretty gems-something I had been doing for myself for years-and now earn some extra money doing it! The shop quickly turned into a fun hobby and over time before I knew it I had registered it into a business. The name AveryDay Vintage comes from our son Matthew Avery. Since this little shop has allowed me the opportunity to stay home to care for him, it was only fitting. It’s also a play on words. I don’t sell the most expensive or the rarest collection of vintage. My shop is designed for the everyday vintage loving gal. Who wants to wear her dress to the grocery store as well as a big event now and then? Pretty day dresses that can be dressed up or down, with some extra special finds sprinkled in.
Has it been a smooth road?
The escalation from hobby to business seems like a blur looking back but I vividly remember the day this became my full-time job and I made the financial jump. The questions of “wow is this really happening? Can I do this? Will I be successful?” definitely fill my mind to this day and push me to do my best in providing the best content for my client base. My husband was and is my biggest supporter. He does post office runs, other behind the scenes work and does the shop accounts which is a huge relief as owning a business requires a mathematical skill set that I don’t have. He helps make this shop run smoothly. Has it been a smooth road? No. Balancing family life and a business is challenging. I work around our son’s schedule. His needs ultimately come first. There have been times where I have had to stop and reset, times I’ve had to remind myself of my priorities or have had to readjust the time I spend on the business. I’ve learned that if my family’s needs are met, if they’re happy, I enjoy my work more. In the end whatever decision, I make must be for the benefit of the ones I love the most. Hobbies don’t tend to conflict with other responsibilities. Owning a business and relying on it to provide for a family gets a little more complicated. It’s a daily challenge. But one I fully enjoy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with AveryDay Vintage – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My shop specializes in vintage dresses. Affordable for the everyday vintage loving girl. Because the shop is an “Instashop”, all sales are done directly on Instagram, with sales being completed one-on-one with each customer. I am fortunate to have the ability to take advantage of this amazing platform. The age of the online shopping convenience coupled with the appealing visual aesthetic that Instagram provides makes for a wonderful marriage. Not to mention connecting directly with your customer base, makes the shopping experience more personable. I’m proud of the product that’s offered, the connections I have made about my clients, that the shop is thriving and that I have been able to expand the AveryDay brand with the company’s sister instashop “AveryDay Vintage Market”. The market is just that-a marketplace. Starting and running a shop is difficult. One may have dreams of starting a Boutique or may not have those goals but needs to purge their existing collection. Either way, it’s hard to know where to start or figure out logistics of selling online. That’s where AveryDay Vintage Market comes in. We guide you through the selling process and provide a page to sell on. We have also branched out into the custom dress market. Working with an amazing seamstress Hortensia in creating custom made vintage replicas all made from vintage fabrics and linens. The expansion means the AveryDay team has grown. I have two capable women, Lisa and Suzy, who run AveryDay Vintage Market very well.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There’s so much to love about this city, from the beaches to the great food spots & awesome sites. Other than the higher cost of living and traffic, there’s not much to hate. Mind you many may say those are big cons to living here, but the pros outweigh the cons I can assure you.
