Check Out Larae Wilson’s Story

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Larae Wilson again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Larae, always such a pleasure connecting with you and thank you for sharing your stories, insights and inspiring messages with our community. We’re looking forward to getting the download and what you have been up to since our last interview, but first can you briefly introduce yourself to folks who might have missed the prior conversation.
I am LaRae Wilson, a multifaceted creative professional whose journey has spanned education, fashion, and the film industry. Every step of my career has been driven by a passion for creativity and storytelling, and I believe that all of my life experiences have uniquely prepared me for the path I’m on today.

I began my professional journey as an educator, where I discovered my ability to inspire and connect with others. Fueled by a desire to explore my artistic side, I taught myself to sew and found remarkable success as a fashion designer. My love for beautiful fabrics and intricate designs became the hallmark of my work in fashion. After years of thriving in the fashion world, I transitioned to the film industry, where I’ve made my mark as a costume designer, bringing characters to life through clothing and style.

Throughout my career in film and television, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to a range of exciting projects. Some of my most notable credits include “Phantom of the Opera,” “Hell Hath No Fury,” the Emmy-nominated series “Studio City,” and “The Runner,” where I earned my first nomination for Best Costume Designer. One of my proudest moments was winning recognition for my work on “The King is Dead.”

In recent years, I’ve expanded my creative horizons by producing, writing, and directing. These new ventures have allowed me to explore my passion for storytelling in greater depth. My projects include “Social Disturbance,” which is currently streaming on Tubi, and “FIRE,” streaming on “In the Black Network” since February 1, 2025. I’m in development with several other features length projects, which is very exciting.

I specialize in crafting suspenseful horror movies that feature strong, complex female protagonists. I love blending gripping narratives with subtle humor to create a unique cinematic experience. My deep appreciation for exquisite garments and textiles continues to influence my work, bringing an extra layer of artistry to everything I do.

As I look to the future, I am excited to keep pushing boundaries, telling compelling stories, and inspiring others with my passion for creativity and dedication to my craft.

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
My career has been a rich tapestry of growth and ambition. I continue to work in the Costume Department on various movies, where I cherish the opportunity to create garments that make people look their prettiest, silliest, scariest, or whatever ‘ist’ they want to embody. Costume design remains a deep passion of mine, but I’ve also discovered a profound love for being involved in the entire filmmaking process. Recently, I had the opportunity to Line Produce a feature film, which opened my eyes to yet another facet of this industry that I adore. Now, my ambitions extend to imagining new stories, planning future movies, and embracing every challenge and opportunity that comes my way. With each project, I’m driven by a relentless passion for creativity and a desire to inspire through my work.

Life is often about tough choices – can you talk to us about your thought process, strategy or philosophy when it comes to making difficult choices or tradeoffs.
Making positive life and career choices involves a mix of faith, trust, and a touch of grace. Here’s how to approach it:

Faith in God: Life’s twists and turns may leave you feeling a little lost, but trust that God has a plan—one that’s far more interesting than anything you could’ve come up with on your own. Just because things seem messy now doesn’t mean they won’t come together later. Trust that He’s got it handled, even if you can’t see the full map.

Trust in Yourself: You know you better than anyone else—so trust your instincts. You’ve got the skills, the wisdom, and the drive to make it happen. Don’t let anyone’s doubts (including your own) get in the way. You’re the main character here, not a supporting role. Own it.

Grace to Make Mistakes: Mistakes? Oh, absolutely—you’re going to make them. And that’s perfectly fine. If life were perfect, we’d all be bored. So give yourself the grace to stumble, learn from it, and keep going. Nobody’s winning gold for perfection, but everyone’s better for the lessons they learn along the way.

In the end, making positive choices is about having faith, trusting yourself, and embracing the journey with all its ups and downs. Life’s too short to be anything but real, so go ahead, make those choices, and own every bit of it—even the mistakes.
