Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor McPartland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in a really small town near Yosemite in Northern California. From there, I attended high school in Sacramento and moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to attend Whittier College.
I graduated from college in 2007 with an art degree and founded my first company in 2009. As a first time entrepreneur (and an art major, nonetheless), I considered the next several years my trial by entrepreneurial fire, learning as I went along with the support of my co-founders and investors.
We guided the company through several rebrands and pivots, eventually finding out stride as one of the leading crowdfunding (specifically equity crowdfunding) agencies and ran some of the most successful campaigns in history.
I stepped away from the company in 2015 and founded ScaleLA in 2016 with the hypothesis that true societal progress can’t be achieved without improved collaboration and communication between innovators, the public sector, and the broader community.
In 2018, I divided ScaleLA into two organizations, a non-profit designed to empower underserved youth to explore entrepreneurial careers, and a for-profit innovation space focused on providing end-to-end resources for healthcare startups to grow, succeed, and reinvest in the Los Angeles area.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road, and that’s what makes it fun! For me, I get excited about tackling big, hard challenges and with those challenges come a lot of unknowns. It’s the emotional and psychological battle of never being truly comfortable with where you’re at and what you’re doing that is the most difficult for me, but it’s also what I enjoy the most.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
ScaleLA’s vision is to be the engine of progress in the Los Angeles area, and we aim to do that by building collaboration and communication between startups, partners (both public and private), and the community.
Currently, this vision is manifested as a 15,000 sq ft innovation space in West Los Angeles that is dedicated to innovation that improves the mind, body, and/or soul of Angelenos. We aim to be the hub that connects all of the primary players in our region’s healthcare space that share a vision for turning the LA area into the next hub of healthcare innovation.
In short, we provide end-to-end solutions for healthcare innovators to help them build their companies, secure funding and identify partnerships for long-term growth. In the future, we plan on opening up other spaces focused on other sectors beyond healthcare.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There are always ways that we can improve, but LA is a great city to start a startup. Since I was so green when I started my career, I needed a welcoming, approachable community where I could grow, and LA absolutely fit that bill.
