Today we’d like to introduce you to Starr Swift.
Hi Starr, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For years I’ve always been into photography. I love the art and always enjoyed watching photographer’s work. I would always be the person taking all the group photos at events and outings, making sure I captured their angels as perfect as possible. Before getting into photography and media, I was a stay at home mother to my three children, and before that, I was a school bus driver on and off for ten years. During 2019, my family and I went through some hardship and lost our home. After doing so much to get back on our feet, my husband and I got a fresh start with a new apartment in January of 2020. We thought that this was going to be the start to our big moment. Shortly after the Covid Shutdown happened and life changed rapidly. Many people lost their jobs and my husband sadly was among those that did. We really didn’t know what we were going to do. I took this moment to invest in myself and with my husband’s blessing, I started my business officially. My first job was my cousin’s wedding. It was a Covid wedding and it turned out beautifully. I was nervous about putting myself out there, but the public embraced me and I haven’t had a month without work since I started. I feel blessed to say that. I’m still learning and growing daily. My clients are family to me whether I know them personally or meeting them for the first time. My job is to capture your memories and make sure they are memorable. I still take classes because the craft is always changing and this has truly been such a joy and privilege to work with such amazing people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It truly has been a road of growth! LOL. The biggest struggle for me was managing my household while learning the business while operating the business at the same time. I’m a mother of three (two of which whom are autistic), so it was a challenge to remain totally open to my children and my husband and still run a business. I’m not perfect, never will claim to be. I give my best as much as I can every time I pick up my camera. I’m here for the people. That’s why I call my business Swift Productions LLC because I started my business with my family in mind first.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a professional photographer. I’m open to any type of photography, but I specialize the most in family, children, event and nature photography.
I’m most proud of my growth. I started out with such a small knowing of cameras. Thanks to people like my friend Britni Stafford (@somewhereovertheborderphoto on Instagram) and others, I have grown significantly in the past year and still growing. I’m looking forward to so many great things in the future. I’m also grateful to have done a photoshoot with the beautiful Hailie Sahar from the Emmy Award Winning Show POSE. She believed in me from the beginning and I will forever be grateful for her trusting me with her beauty to my lens.
I’m currently the professional photographer for “Justice for Bruce’s Beach”. I’ve been working with this organization and with Kavon Ward to capture the images for the current movement to return the land back to the Bruce Family. Every protest, news conference, or event… I’m the photographer capturing the images and I’m pretty proud to be a part of such a historic moment as it’s still developing. This has been an amazing opportunity that I do not take lightly at all. I’m grateful.
What sets me apart from others is ME. I treat everyone like family from the moment I meet them. I want people to be comfortable and happy when they shoot with me. I still keep in touch with many of my clients to this very day. I’m so grateful for their belief in me and what I do.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m working towards opening own my own studio one day. There are so many different ideas I have that I would love to have the space to work and present them in. I take photos once a month with different women of all shapes and sizes to promote body positivity. I’m currently doing a series called “Tending the crops” where I’m highlighting women of all shapes wearing crop tops. It’s really been giving good feelings to all women to be comfortable and beautiful in your body at any size. I enjoy doing this because I’m behind the lens and in front of it.
