Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Hodges.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ryan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Although I have had my ups and downs with a camera in my hand, photography has enabled me to live a happy & satisfied life. The first time I picked up a SLR was in 2006. I went to a local CVS bought some cheap film and went to work. The trial and error process of learning how to shoot with film was very challenging–take a shot, write down setting, take another shot, write down the setting and etc. After a few months, I began to understand what, at the time, I would consider a good photograph.
In 2008, I attended Columbia College Chicago as a photography major. The school taught me how to print images and how to survive on my own. After only taking a couple of photography classes, I had to move back home to Middlebury, Indiana. After being home for only a few months, my camera was stolen. At the time, I didn’t think too much about it because—well, I hadn’t touched it since college anyway. I decided I was going to go to cosmetology school. I moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to start my new career path as a cosmetologist. After being in school for a couple of months, I was granted a loan and that enabled me to purchase my first digital camera.
While in Cosmetology school and because of my background in photography, I was asked to take photographs at school events. Out of nowhere my passion for creating images came back. I graduated cosmetology school and headed straight to Detroit to work on still images for a film for a month. After finishing my work in Detroit, I worked as a photographer in LA & Fort Wayne, IN.
Now that I am back in Los Angeles, I have built a life that revolves around my camera. I have a wonderful girlfriend as a full time assistant & an amazing 8 year old son. I also teach photography classes for people who want to learn how to take the next step towards perfecting their skills with a camera.
Photography has not only allowed me to travel across Untied States, but other countries as well. I have met some of the best people and have had some of the best experiences. However, my journey is far from over. I hope to keep pushing myself to be the best photographer that I can be. I never stop learning and I never stop trying new things. I love what I do and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes & No. Making a living with a camera can be a rollercoaster! One of the toughest struggles that I will always encounter is having enough time to complete post work. The jobs we take on usually have us traveling often which makes living on a computer tough.
Ryan Hodges Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have been known to photograph just about anything. Weddings, Music, Advertising etc. I find joy simply in making pictures. As of late music has been a huge part of my life as a photographer. Photographing musicians promos or live is always a different experience. It’s nearly impossible for me to get somewhat bored.
As a company, I am mostly proud of photographing artist’s that are well known in the music industry. Musicians at a high level are always unique and in my opinion, are very important to document. You never know when you might get that photograph that lives forever.
All images we create on location or in the studio are made with artificial light which has always separated us away from others. When put in a boring / bad location you can allow the light to do the heavy lifting.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I wouldn’t say I have had a proudest moment but, I am proud of still making a living with a camera in my hand.
