Meet Reyna Marrufo of Reyna’s Empowers in Baldwin Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reyna Marrufo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Reyna. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
This all started when I was 14 years old when I saw a young girl in my high school’s bathroom crying because her boyfriend broke up with her. It really opened my eyes to see that we needed something that empowered women in my community and really not rely on other people to bring them happiness.

So I decided to create a Young Woman Empowerment Club in high school. I invited all the high school girls to meet after school to talk about our future, college, our goals, and even sexual violence. The more I did these workshops, the more I knew that we needed to help our community. I realized that our community did not really have big goals. But I did.

One of my big goals that I set for myself was to travel to Europe before I graduated high school. I was a young 14-year-old girl who went up to my principal and asked if I could start a Europe Club. She mentioned that this was a school with a lot of low-income students who could not afford such a trip. I did not let that be an excuse, and I made sure she understood that we would fundraise the money and go to Europe.

After three years of hard work, planning, fundraising and keeping the students motivated on our goal – 12 students from my community traveled to Europe. We landed in London, next Italy, and then France. Standing in front of the Eiffel Tower at 17 years old I realized that with a lot of hard work, motivation, and passion anything is possible. This experience was really the foundation of my strong mindset.

After High School, I went to UC Santa Cruz, and I was majoring in business. During my second year, I was incredibly depressed because I felt like I wasn’t doing something I loved and it was literally killing me inside. After winning a contest and attending an Entrepreneurship conference, I was inspired to continue doing my women empowerment, and I decided to drop out of school.

This was a major shock for my family and for my friends because everyone thought that school was going to be my future, but I wanted to create my own path. I created my own website and started a blog, but I soon realized I wasn’t very fond of writing, so I decided to create a YouTube channel. Then I learned about podcasts so I decided to create my own podcast where I can interview inspiring Latino entrepreneurs and share their story of overcoming adversity.

During all of this I was continuing hosting workshops and collaborating with inspiring entrepreneurs, and I was really growing my own brand. I loved sharing my journey and creating unique content and sharing valuable resources to the community. I saw how I was attracting a lot of entrepreneurs into my life and a lot of new entrepreneurs that did not know how to market their business or promote themselves.

A lot of them seeked my advice on how they can put their idea out there and create their own brand. This was when I decided to open up my Instagram Marketing Management and Brand Consulting business. I offer social media management services as well as consult people on how to grow their brand on Instagram. Instagram has introduced me to empowering, and incredible individuals and I use it as a great tool to connect the community together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The year I decided to drop out of school was probably one of the hardest years so far because I did not know anyone my age that had dropped out of college. Many people were very shocked because I was someone who always was about school and education. I still am, but I invest my money in personal development courses, social media courses, and business coaches now.

As a first-generation Latina my parents really wanted me to have a secure job, but I have always known that I wanted to do my own thing and start a business. My parents and I would argue all the time in my first year because I left school. I even moved out of my house for a while because I was so focused on my goals and I did not want to be influenced to not go for my goals.

My parents were still a little confused in what I was going to do, and honestly, I was still a little confused too! But I knew that school was not for me. Plus, I was paying for my own education and living on my own, but the quality of education I was receiving in college was not equivalent to the incredible amount of debt I was getting myself in to.

Many people would ask me what I was going to do with my life and sometimes try to convince me to return back to school and that was probably the hardest because obviously, I didn’t have a set plan or an exact answer for them, but I had to stay strong in what I really wanted and did not let others influence me.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Reyna’s Empowers – what should we know?
I am a Social Media Marketing Manager. I help entrepreneurs create unique content and expand their business with Instagram. I manage their social media accounts and help them market their business. I love to work with all kinds of business owners that are passionate about their work, but my ideal client is the person that wants to brand themselves. I love finding creative ways to for people to share their story and connect with others all over the world.

Another service I offer is a mastermind that I call the T.R.U.E. Instagram Marketing Method. I created the T.R.U.E. Instagram Marketing Method where I teach you how to build traffic to your Instagram page, provide value to your Instagram followers, create unique content, and have high engagement. This is more for people who want to learn themselves how to market themselves. I am most proud of how much the people that I work with grow as an individual.

Every person that I have worked with not only grows in their business and marketing but also leave with a more abundant mindset. I really challenge my clients to think bigger. In my eyes, I see this incredible person who has such a beautiful vision, but I know they are capable of so much more than what they think. I set myself apart from others in that I make sure my clients are not only growing in their business but in all areas of their life.

I have them complete a wheel of life chart where they rate where they are in all areas of their life. I really care for my clients and not only do I assist them in their marketing, but I try my best to help them with the other areas in their life where they feel they can improve. It is so incredible to see their growth and how much more inspired they are to continue following their passion.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am extremely resourceful. Throughout my own journey, I’ve never had anything given to me I am the youngest of six girls, and my parents were only able to provide the very basics to all of us. They did instill hard work and passion in all of us though.

In high school, I would sell chips in order to have my own type of money. In high school when I didn’t want to be part of any of the clubs that existed I decided to start my own two clubs. After dropping out of college and wanted to host events and build my brand I had no mentor or guidance whatsoever, but I always was very resourceful and figured things out.

If I wanted to attend a conference, I was not afraid to email people, reach out to the organizers on Facebook, where I would for sponsorship or ask them to volunteer in order for me to attend the event. I realized that 99% of the time they were in awe with my passion and would give me some kind of opportunity. They could see how hungry I am to learn and how dedicated I am to share these resources with my community.

This characteristic has allowed me to expand my experience and meet inspiring individuals that will help me get closer to my goals. Try not to settle or use the word “can’t,” and ask yourself “how.”
