Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Folsom.
Philip, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I came from a classic heavy pre-trauma background; lots of poverty, single mom and failure. I joined the Army at 17 and came out of that with a load of PTSD and the need to reboot my life and purpose.
This personal vision quest lead me down the path of personal development and self-mastery that exposed me to a host of transformational experiences including rock climbing, mountaineering, equestrian therapy, ropes courses, meditation and martial arts. I eventually realized that what I was discovering was what both individuals and organizations also want to discover: how to be healthy and high performing. This has been my career and sacred purpose ever since.
20 years later and I continue on this path and now my clients include notable organizations like Redbull, Google and SpaceX. I have recently started the first team development program using Zen archery and also have a game changing Tribe-work workshop using a pack of real grey wolves.
I am an anthropologist, adjunct professor at the USC Marshall School of Business and sit on numerous boards and panels at Redbull High Performance Department. I also am the co-founder of SPARTA a PTSD and suicide prevention program for warriors.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Joseph Campbell said “The cave we fear to enter contains the treasure we seek” and all of my treasure has come directly from this cave of fear, trauma and adversity. I lived for years in the shadow-woods of poverty and failure and my journeys there have taught me the ways through the woods so well that I can now guide others out. And the only way out is always through.
I say: enter the cave that you fear. Build a fire. Stay awhile. You find there is nothing scary in the cave except yourself anyway…
Please tell us about Philip Folsom Programs.
I specialize in assisting my clients in upgrading their cultures into super healthy, resilient and high performing teams that we call Tribes. I do this with a combination of my unique curriculum coupled with engaging and impactful experiences like high ropes challenge courses, Zen Archery, Vision Quests into the wilderness and workshops with horses and real wolves.
I am currently proudest of my Wolf Wisdom program that uses a pack of rescued grey wolves to explore and discover how to be truly collaborative, have healthy conflict and hunt big life-game with our Tribe. It’s a game-changing experience.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
In the woods at night and being aware that there was an older, more powerful wisdom in the world that is always there. I’m always looking for it.
