Meet Miranda North of Miranda North Photography in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda North.

Miranda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like most high-schoolers, I took a photography class that sort of sparked interest, but truly it was not until I was 21 that I really pursued photography. I actually attended art school for a while for photography, but realized that the best lessons I was going to learn, was actually working in the field. I feel like often in school they have this ” vision” they put of success in commercial/fashion photography, so truthfully, I was not even thinking about family or baby photography when I was getting started. To soft of grasp what I wanted to do, I reached out with fingers crossed to one of the top fashion photographers, celebrity photographers and music photographers in LA in a random email asking to learn under them, and surprisingly all said yes! Wow, I am getting wordy here lol! Anyways, I learned so much from each of them, so much of each lifestyle, each unique way they photograph. It was when I had my son that I really found that love for baby and maternity photography. It just sort of naturally evolved into something I wasn’t planning, but aren’t those how the best thing happen?

Has it been a smooth road?
Rejection, rejection, acceptance, rejection. That’s the name of the game when breaking into any dream or business you are starting. Art is so personal, it’s something you create so when people at first would say no, it was hard to not take it personally but realize this is the business end of it. But it was through learning that I think some of my biggest struggles were early on when I felt I needed to make my work look like “so and so” if I was going to stick with baby photography to get more of the “yes” answers. The pressure, the comparison, it just was not productive and really hard. It was once I just decided to photograph the way I was inspired, and the way I wanted to rather than a trend that may be happening, that my bookings took off and the nos were less and less.

Of course, I still get them, but you become more confident in what you have created knowing there is a photographer for everyone, and if it’s not me, that’s okay!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Miranda North Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in newborn, baby and maternity photography and I take portraits. Not trying to be all ” artsy” by saying I am not a photographer, but I feel more of a portrait taker rather than a photographer. That’s my thing and that’s my goal, to take a beautiful picture in every sense of the image of everyone in front of my camera. Not so much about capturing the moment but capturing the person…

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Everything is always chaining, and it would be silly to not try to stay on top of that being a business owner. But rather than changing to a trend, I try to say on top of technology and making sure that my business can stay ” relevant” if you will to the current market!
